Search User Interfaces (SUIs) represent the gateway between people who have a task to complete, and the repositories of information and data stored around the world. Not surprisingly, therefore, there are many communities who have a vested interest in the way SUIs are designed. There are people who study how humans search for information, and people who study how humans use computers. There are people who study good user interface design, and people who design aesthetically pleasing user interfaces. There are also people who curate and manage valuable information resources, and people who design effective algorithms to retrieve results from them. While it would be easy for one community to reject another for their limited ability to design a good SUI, the truth is that they all can, and they all have made valuable contributions. Fundamentally, therefore, we must accept that designing a great SUI means leveraging the knowledge and skills from all of these communities. The aim of this book is to at least acknowledge, if not integrate, all of these perspectives to bring the reader into a multidisciplinary mindset for how we should think about SUI design. Further, this book aims to provide the reader with a framework for thinking about how different innovations each contribute to the overall design of a SUI. With this framework and a multidisciplinary perspective in hand, the book then continues by reviewing: early, successful, established, and experimental concepts for SUI design. The book then concludes by discussing how we can analyse and evaluate the on-going developments in SUI design, as this multidisciplinary area of research moves forwards. Finally, in reviewing these many SUIs and SUI features, the book finishes by extracting a series of 20 SUI design recommendations that are listed in the conclusions. Table of Contents: Introduction / Searcher-Computer Interaction / Early Search User Interfaces / Modern Search User Interfaces / Experimental Search User Interfaces / Evaluating Search User Interfaces / Conclusions

This book focuses on the human users of search engines and the tool they use to interact with them: the search user interface. The truly worldwide reach of the Web has brought with it a new realization among computer scientists and laypeople of the enormous importance of usability and user interface design. In the last ten years, much has become understood about what works in search interfaces from a usability perspective, and what does not. Researchers and practitioners have developed a wide range of innovative interface ideas, but only the most broadly acceptable make their way into major web search engines. This book summarizes these developments, presenting the state of the art of search interface design, both in academic research and in deployment in commercial systems. Many books describe the algorithms behind search engines and information retrieval systems, but the unique focus of this book is specifically on the user interface. It will be welcomed by industry professionals who design systems that use search interfaces as well as graduate students and academic researchers who investigate information systems.

Search Engines For Children written by Tatiana Gossen and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-01-14 with Computers categories.

The doctoral thesis of Tatiana Gossen formulates criteria and guidelines on how to design the user interfaces of search engines for children. In her work, the author identifies the conceptual challenges based on own and previous user studies and addresses the changing characteristics of the users by providing a means of adaptation. Additionally, a novel type of search result visualisation for children with cartoon style characters is developed taking children’s preference for visual information into account.

Search Interface Design And Evaluation written by Ying-Hsang Liu and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-12-13 with categories.

Information seeking and use is now routine in people's everyday lives. Searching through various information retrieval systems such as web search engines or search functions within information systems allows users to gain access to information on the Internet. Whereas most research in this area has focused on the algorithms behind the search engines from technical perspectives, in this monograph, the authors focus on the search interface, the place where searchers interact with the search system.Search Interface Design and Evaluation reviews the research on the design and evaluation of search user interfaces of the past 10 years. The authors' primary goal is to integrate state-of-the-art search interface research in the areas of information seeking behavior, information retrieval, and human-computer interaction. The monograph describes the history and background of the development of the search interface and introduces information search behavior models that help conceptualize users' information needs. The authors also characterize the major components of search interfaces that support different subprocesses based on Marchonini's information seeking process model, review the design of search interfaces for different user groups, and identify evaluation methods of search interfaces and how they were implemented. Lastly, they provide an outlook on the future trends of search interfaces that includes conversational search interfaces, search interfaces supporting serendipity and creativity, and searching in immersive and virtual reality environments.
