The problems related to the process of industrialisation such as biodiversity depletion, climate change and a worsening of health and living conditions, especially but not only in developing countries, intensify. Therefore, there is an increasing need to search for integrated solutions to make development more sustainable. The United Nations has acknowledged the problem and approved the “2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”. On 1st January 2016, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the Agenda officially came into force. These goals cover the three dimensions of sustainable development: economic growth, social inclusion and environmental protection. The Encyclopedia of the UN Sustainable Development Goals comprehensively addresses the SDGs in an integrated way. It encompasses 17 volumes, each one devoted to one of the 17 SDGs. This volume addresses SDG 15, namely "Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss" and contains the description of a range of terms, which allow a better understanding and foster knowledge. Concretely, the defined targets are: Ensure the conservation, restoration and sustainable use of terrestrial and inland freshwater ecosystems and their services, in particular forests, wetlands, mountains and drylands, in line with obligations under international agreements Promote the implementation of sustainable management of all types of forests, halt deforestation, restore degraded forests and substantially increase afforestation and reforestation globally Combat desertification, restore degraded land and soil, including land affected by desertification, drought and floods, and strive to achieve a land degradation-neutral world Ensure the conservation of mountain ecosystems, including their biodiversity, in order to enhance their capacity to provide benefits that are essential for sustainable development Take urgent and significant action to reduce the degradation of natural habitats, halt the loss of biodiversity and protect and prevent the extinction of threatened species Promote fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising from the utilization of genetic resources and promote appropriate access to such resources, as internationally agreed Take urgent action to end poaching and trafficking of protected species of flora and fauna and address both demand and supply of illegal wildlife products Introduce measures to prevent the introduction and significantly Reduce the impact of invasive alien species on land and water ecosystems and control or eradicate the priority species Integrate ecosystem and biodiversity values into national and local planning, development processes, poverty reduction strategies and accounts Mobilize and significantly increase financial resources from all sources to conserve and sustainably use biodiversity and ecosystems Mobilize significant resources from all sources and at all levels to finance sustainable forest management and provide adequate incentives to developing countries to advance such management, including for conservation and reforestation Enhance global support for efforts to combat poaching and trafficking of protected species, including by increasing the capacity of local communities to pursue sustainable livelihood opportunities Editorial Board Alexandra Aragão, Desalegn Yayeh Ayal, Ayansina Ayanlade, Anabela Marisa Azul, Adriana Consorte-McCrea, Muhammad Farooq, Ana Catarina Luz, María P. Seminar paper from the year 2022 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Demographics, Urban Management, Planning, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (Department of Geography and GIScience), language: English, abstract: This paper looks at policy input in three countries to manage natural disasters that occur on a regular basis. These countries are Canada, Bangladesh, and Indonesia. In the chapters about Canada, information about wildfires and (flash) floods is presented, looking at various reasons for the disasters as well as institutions involved in policymaking. The same content goes for cyclones in Bangladesh and earthquakes in Indonesia. In all four instances, historical evidence about particularly strong cases of these four types of disasters is presented, which underscores the continuous relevance for society and politics. Including a variety of information of different types of sources, the paper contributes to a debate about disaster management and relief mechanisms as well as policymaking capacities.

In an era of unprecedented global change, understanding how spatial patterns influence ecological processes is a practical necessity for navigating the environmental challenges of the 21st century. The Landscape Ecology Legacy: From Spatial Patterns to Real-World Solutions offers a comprehensive synthesis of this critical field, grounded in the premise that spatial heterogeneity is not merely background noise but a primary driver of ecological outcomes. It bridges the gap between classical ecology s species focus and the modern imperative for large-scale spatial and socio-ecological perspectives. This textbook equips upper-level students, scholars, and practitioners in ecology, conservation, and planning with a robust, up-to-date review of the discipline, from foundational theory to cutting-edge methods and real-world applications. Organized to build a cohesive understanding, the text progresses from core concepts—the patch-corridor-matrix model, scale, hierarchy theory, and landscape metrics—to thematic applications including habitat fragmentation, connectivity, fire regimes, and socio-ecological integration. Global case studies, from Amazonian forest fragmentation to green infrastructure in North America, ground theoretical discussions in tangible examples. Synthesizing seminal literature and long-term research, and written in a clear, accessible tone, The Landscape Ecology Legacy aims to develop the spatial and ecological literacy needed to address complex environmenta

"'Leave no one behind,' the central ethos of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), guides Anne through her new project on sustainable development. Once again she is investigating whether the EU has moved towards sustainable development over the past 10 years, this time in the context of the SDGs. Based on indicators provided by Eurostat, she tries to find out how relevant the SDGs are in the European context. Figures for the future is a statistical guide to the EU sustainable development indicators in the context of the SDGs. It communicates statistical figures as seen through the eyes of a fictional 21-year-old student, Anne. Anne aims to find answers to many questions that relate to our everyday lives and our future. What does it mean to be poor in Europe? How do we treat nature and our natural resources? Will there be jobs for young people like her? What about quality of life? These and many other questions are answered while Anne is writing a blog on sustainable development as part of her Young Women in Journalism scholarship. She links events in her everyday life to the SDGs, and looks into the statistics behind them. This book is a summary of all her blog entries."--Page 4 of cover.
