The relationship between the practice of dance and the technologies of representation has excited artists since the advent of film. Dancers, choreographers, and directors are increasingly drawn to screendance, the practice of capturing dance as a moving image mediated by a camera. While the interest in screendance has grown in importance and influence amongst artists, it has until now flown under the academic radar. Emmy-nominated director and auteur Douglas Rosenberg's groundbreaking book considers screendance as both a visual art form as well as an extension of modern and post-modern dance without drawing artificial boundaries between the two. Both a history and a critical framework, Screendance: Inscribing the Ephemeral Image is a new and important look at the subject. As he reconstructs the history and influences of screendance, Rosenberg presents a theoretical guide to navigating the boundaries of an inherently collaborative art form. Drawing on psycho-analytic, literary, materialist, queer, and feminist modes of analysis, Rosenberg explores the relationships between camera and subject, director and dancer, and the ephemeral nature of dance and the fixed nature of film. This interdisciplinary approach allows for a broader discussion of issues of hybridity and mediatized representation as they apply to dance on film. Rosenberg also discusses the audiences and venues of screendance and the tensions between commercial and fine-art cultures that the form has confronted in recent years. The surge of screendance festivals and courses at universities around the world has exposed the friction that exists between art, which is generally curated, and dance, which is generally programmed. Rosenberg explores the cultural implications of both methods of reaching audiences, and ultimately calls for a radical new way of thinking of both dance and film that engages with critical issues rather than simple advocacy.

This edited collection assembles international perspectives from artists, academics, and curators in the field to bring the insights of screendance theory and practice back into conversations with critical methods, at the intersections of popular culture, low-tech media practices, dance, and movement studies, and the minoritarian perspectives of feminism, queer theory, critical race studies and more. This book represents new vectors in screendance studies, featuring contributions by both artists and theoreticians, some of the most established voices in the field as well as the next generation of emerging scholars, artists, and curators. It builds on the foundational cartographies of screendance studies that attempted to sketch out what was particular to this practice. Sampling and reworking established forms of inquiry, artistic practice and spectatorial habits, and suspending and reorienting gestures into minoritarian forms, these conversations consider the affordances of screendance for reimaging the relations of bodies, technologies, and media today. This collection will be of great interest to students and scholars in dance studies, performance studies, cinema and media studies, feminist studies, and cultural studies.

This thesis project is comprised of a written paper and a choreographic work. The choreographic component was presented in the Experimental Media Lab in the Contemporary Arts Center of the University of California- Irvine on May 15 and 16, 2015. The work was presented in the form of an interactive performance exhibition, where the audience was invited to participate in certain aspects of the performance. The installation explored the blurring of the line between audience and performer through a linear development. The exhibition started with the space divided by curtains, showcasing live dancers as well as screendance and video projections. The second half of the exhibition opened up into one large floor, which the audience and performers shared. The supporting paper attempts to find a model for showcasing screendance works that provides an embodied experience, such as an interactive performance exhibition. After a brief historical overview of the development screendance and the development of curation, the paper looks at the ways that screendance curatorial practice can function to diversify the exhibition of screendance works. This thesis includes a survey of current screendance festivals, as well as ideas from interviews with current screendance practitioners to paint a cohesive picture of the current practices in the field. It then proposes that the interactive performance exhibition can be an alternative model to present screendance through an analysis of how exhibition space, live performance, and video projection can create a hybrid performance installation.

Screendance as an interdisciplinary practice influenced by the histories of cinema and dance, necessitates a vocabulary aimed specifically at perceiving it as an autonomous art form. This study is a qualitative, practice-based investigation into the ways in which Laban Movement Analysis (LMA) can contribute to the development of a screendance vocabulary. The aim of this study is to observe and analyse the ways in which screendance utilises space. Observation within the context of LMA refers to recognising changes regarding the Body, Effort, Shape and Space patterns discernible in a mover. A perceptive observer will describe the moveraÌ22́Ơ4́Øs emerging patterns through an application of the LMA taxonomy (Fernandes 2015:275). Therefore, this observational and analytical approach facilitates an awareness regarding the specific spatial, temporal and energetic qualities attributed to movements, gestures and expressions. The LMA system furthermore, observes and analyses how these movement sequences can become meaningful through various movement combinations (Baron & Carnicke 2008:204). This study is located in the domain of screendance. It aims firstly to observe and analyse excerpts from These Three Rooms (McPherson 1992), Rosas danst Rosas (De Mey 1997) and CoNCrEte (Ginslov 2009) in order to demonstrate the efficacy of an LMA-based vocabulary for screendance. This observation and analysis address the moveraÌ22́Ơ4́Øs performance in space. In addition, this process foregrounds the general observable LMA concepts (Body, Effort, Shape and Space) and camera movement, as well as the camera's relationship with the Kinesphere of the mover. This process of observation and analysis serves as an impetus for the second aim of this study, i.e. to interrogate the functionality and expressivity of LMA as a choreographic approach towards screendance. This application suggests a personal, self-reflexion on the creative process followed, as a means of creating a new and original screendance entitled Archi(na)ture (Prinsloo 2017). In order to validate this application of LMA, the study applies the two-layered framework of screendance observation and analysis to Archi(na)ture (Prinsloo 2017). The study concludes that screendance, and particularly space in screendance, is perceivable through LMA as a pragmatic vocabulary when creating screendance, in addition to observation and analysis.
