A highly readable and absorbing anthology of traditional Scottish customs and rites of passage, Scottish Customs from the Cradle to the Grave draws upon a broad range of literary and oral sources. Scotland has been fortunate to have written accounts of intrepid early travellers such as Martin Martin, Edward Burt and John Lane Buchanan, and extracts from their writing are found alongside modern interviews made by Margaret Bennett and researchers from the School of Scottish Studies at Edinburgh University. This expanded edition includes a large amount of new material. The result is a detailed and comprehensive picture of social behaviour in Scotland over the last 400 years. The book is divided into three sections, each covering a stage in the cycle of life: Childbirth and infancy; Love, courtship and marriage; Death The first edition was originally published by Polygon and was joint runner-up of the 1993 Katharine Briggs Folklore Award.

Customs play an important part in all societies and offer fascinating insights into a country's history and culture. Scotland boasts a multitude of unique customs, many of which can be traced back to the times of the Druids, Celts and Romans. This book introduces hundreds of Scottish customs associated with a huge range of topics. As well as customs associated with key events of our lives, from birth to death, it also includes customs associated with the world of work, food and drink, health, animals and nature. Extracts from written works through the ages bring these customs to life and show how important they have been in the story of Scotland for thousands of years.

An overview of Scottish culture from the time of union with England and Wales up to and through the moment of devolution to the present.A wide-ranging introduction to Scottish culture, this book examines the central place of Scottish cultural studies within British cultural studies, describing the changing relationship of Scotland and the union as a whole. Scotland has a disproportionately high production of British output in many fields - technological, colonial, political, artistic and literary - and this book shows how Scotland, long used to the differences between nation and government, is leading the constitutional changes which are accompanying the break-up of the British union today. It condenses much of the pioneering research done on Scottish Studies over the last couple of decades, as well as introducing new research which helps link the field and make sense of this rapidly changing nation. Each chapter introduces an aspect of modern Scottish culture, including film, religion, sport, cultural history, mass media and literature. The first introduction to Scottish cultural studies, this book is aimed at undergraduates, 'A' Level students and the general reader interested in the culture of Scotland, and cultural studies as a whole.Key Features* The first introduction to Scottish cultural studies, aimed at a wide audience of undergraduates, 'A' Level students and the general reader interested in the culture of Scotland, and cultural studies as a whole* Accessibly written, covering each period since the start of the eighteenth century* Each chapter includes a summary, suggestions for further reading and questions for personal research.

A Maritime History Of Scotland 1650 1790 written by Eric J. Graham and has been published by Birlinn Ltd this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-04-21 with History categories.

The period 1650 to 1790 was such a turbulent one for Scottish seafarers that much of this fast-flowing narrative reads like Treasure Island. Colourful characters abound in a story teeming with incident and excitement: John Paul Jones descends upon the Scottish coast creating widespread panic; press gangs prowl the coastal towns; wartime conditions turn merchantmen into privateers fighting the French, the Spanish and the American Colonists – almost anyone flying a different flag; quaintly named vessels like The Provoked Cheesemaker are on the lookout for trouble. And the stakes were high. Glasgow became wealthy through the tobacco trade. Glasgow merchantmen could beat the English ships and sail to Chesapeake Bay in record time. Eric Graham traces the development of the Scottish marine and its institutions during a formative period, when state intervention and warfare at sea in the pursuit of merchantilist goals largely determined the course of events. He charts Scotland's frustrated attempts to join England in the Atlantic economy and so secure her prosperity – an often bitter relationship that culminated in the Darien Disaster. In the years that followed, maritime affairs were central to the move to embrace the full incorporating Act of 1707. After 1707, Scottish maritime aspirations flourished under the protection of the British Navigation Acts and the windfalls of the endemic warfare at sea.
