School library media centers are at a critical juncture. Over the next decade, schools will undergo fundamental technological, economic, societal, instructional, and administrative changes. Craver discusses the major forces for change confronting school libraries, analyzes their implications as a guide for future decision making, and recommends that school library media specialists assume a leadership role in meeting these challenges. The work provides current data and statistics on future trends in technology, employment, education, society, instruction, and school administration that can help the school library media specialist to formulate forceful arguments for the acquisition of new technologies, instructional reform, and full implementation of resource-based learning. School library media specialists who need to plan and make decisions about the future of their school libraries will find this book an invaluable resource. To visualize the future, Craver creates contrasting scenarios of utopian and dystopian school library media centers in the 21st century. Chapter 1, Technological Trends, discusses the digitalization of all media and the implications of the technological revolution on the school library media center. Chapter 2, Economic Trends, considers the impact of demographic changes and declining budgets and how to deal with them. Chapter 3, Employment Trends, outlines future trends in the workforce and suggests ways in which the school library can respond. Chapter 4, Educational Trends, charts the decline in literacy and the growing school reform movement. Chapter 5, Social and Behavioral Trends, discusses the change from a nation with minorities to a nation of minorities and the transformation of the American family. Chapter 6, Instructional Trends, shows how the instructional role of the school library media specialist will change with the presence of advanced technologies. Chapter 7, Organizational and Managerial Trends, describes the role the school library media specialist will have to assume as the technological, economic, educational, and cultural changes affect the daily business of the media center. Chapter 8, Challenges, focuses on a series of challenges in technology, performance-based programs, collection development, instruction, and organization and manayement of the library media center.

Now that fewer new libraries are being built it is particularly important to maximize space in the buildings available, and to ensure that library plans are determined by the needs of the users. Often the interior of a building will be redesigned, and the librarian can influence the architect's plans. Planning and Designing Libraries for Children and Young People introduces the concept of space as a resource available to the library manager - along with stock, staff and finance - and it will need managing in exactly the same way as any other resource. This publication will enable school and children's librarians to develop a critical and evaluative attitude to the utilization, layout, appearance and environment of their libraries. Dealing both with the needs of the children's and teenage sections of the public library and with the needs of the school library, the book takes the reader through the different stages in the creation of a library space resource, and includes a consideration of the location of the library; the range of accommodation; standards and guidelines; policy, committees and teams; spatial relationships and the library layout; and furniture and equipment. Illustrated with library plans and photographs, and full of practical advice supported by case studies, this book will be an indispensable aid to school and children's librarians, as well as managers of library space, who wish to create a positive environment for children and young people in school and public libraries. It will also be invaluable to practising architects and to those responsible for running courses in layout and design.

1.1 Preamble Schools are the production centres endowed with the noble responsibility of producing learned, civilized and worthy citizens of a country Every school has its own plan of action with a set of well-designed curriculum objectives. The aim of the school is not just academic achievement of the students, rather the development of overall personality of them. And so, emphasis is being given on scholastic, co-scholastic and non-scholastic skills of the students. Libraries in the schools are the strong supporting centres which supplement and complement the accomplishment of the objectives set forth by their parental bodies. They are the knowledge facilitation points in every school. According to the U.S. Commission on Libraries and Information Science (2005), “Students in schools with good school libraries learn more, get better grades, and score higher on standardized test scores”(p.4). As Ranganthan(1962) quoted ‘ The result of modern re-thinking on education is to make the library the heart of the school, from which every activity in the school radiates and by which it all gets irradiated’. International Association of School Librarianship (IASL) Policy statement on school libraries remarks that the school library is essential to "the development of the human personality as well as the spiritual, moral, social, cultural and economic progress of the community"(p.1).

A leader in cooperative collection development for the school library presents a framework for developing school library collections in today's era of access vs. ownership and cooperative resource sharing. This guide provides new tools and techniques for analyzing collections, including ready-to-use collection data-gathering forms and collection assessment and analysis worksheets. Also included are examples of a written collection development policy, a selection policy, a copyright policy and procedures, and an Internet use policy. It shows how to map the school curriculum, represent library collections using automated circulation data, and document priorities for the collection. The guide is based on the premise that school library media specialists must have a clear understanding of their collection strengths and needs before participating in cooperative collection development in order to think globally but act locally. The author provides more than 30 collection assessment tools, worksheets, and exemplary written sample collection policies that have proven effective in school library media centers and can be adapted for use in grades K through 12. Kachel provides both qualitative and quantitative techniques to analyze existing collections based on the conspectus approach. Cooperative collection development activities are detailed, including the financial, technical, and human resources needed for success. Methodologies for providing a rich base of resources matching curricular and student needs in a cost-effective and user-relevant fashion enhance the managerial and leadership role of the school library media specialist. For all school library media specialists who plan to analyze and assess their collection and participate in cooperative collection development, this guide provides all the tools necessary to accurately and successfully manage this activity in a cost-effective manner.
