The desire for precise knowledge about the location of a moving object at any time instant has motivated a great deal of scientific research recently. This is owing to a steady expansion of the range of enabling devices and technologies, as well as the need for seamless solutions for location-based services. Besides localization accuracy, a common requirement for emerging solutions is that they are cost-abstemious, both in terms of the financial and computational cost. Hence, development of localization strategies from already deployed technologies, e.g., from different terrestrial radio frequency sources is of great practical interest. Amongst other, these include localization strategies based on received signal strength (RSS), time of arrival, angle of arrival (AoA) or a combination of them. RSS-AoA-based Target Localization and Tracking in Wireless Sensor Networks presents recent advances in developing algorithms for target localization and tracking, reflecting the state-of-the-art algorithms and research achievements in target localization and tracking based on hybrid (RSS-AoA) measurements. Technical topics discussed in the book include: Centralized RSS-AoA-based Target LocalizationDistributed RSS-AoA-based Target LocalizationRSS-AoA-based Target Tracking via Maximum A Posteriori EstimatorRSS-AoA-based Target Tracking via Kalman Filter RSS-AoA-based via Sensor Navigation This book is of interest for personnel in telecommunications and surveillance industries, military, smart systems, as well as academic staff and postgraduate/research students in telecommunications, signal processing, and non-smooth and convex optimization.

INTRODUCTION Wireless sensor network (WSN) based target tracking has become a major research field in recent years. The WSN is composed of a large number of tiny, battery-powered spatially distributed sensor nodes that can communicate and exchange data with each other. This chapter first explains the fundamentals of wireless sensor networks, their characteristics, limitations, and applications. Next, the WSN based Localization and Tracking (L&T) issues and measurement techniques are discussed.

This dissertation focuses on energy-based target localization in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). A WSN consists of a fusion center and a large number of sensors. The fusion center localizes a target using a maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) method based on decisions received from sensors whose positions are known. However, several factors may degrade localization performance, including imperfect communication channels, sensor faults, sensor position uncertainty, and sensor sleep. Localization performance may be improved if these factors are accounted for in the MLE framework. In this dissertation, models were developed that describe how localization performance is affected by imperfect communication channels, multi-hop communication channels, sensor position uncertainty, sensor faults, and sensor sleep. These models were incorporated into the MLE framework either simultaneously or separately. The Cramer-Rao lower bound on the estimation error (CRLB) was also derived. Simulation results showed that the new MLE methods gave better localization performance in terms of root mean square (RMS) estimation errors than current methods which ignore these factors that degrade localization performance. Moreover, the RMS estimation errors were close to the CRLB. Based on the sensor sleep model, an energy saving strategy was developed in which the sensor sleep probability is used to adjust energy consumption of the WSN. However, although the sensor sleep strategy saves energy, sleeping sensors cannot send decisions to the fusion center and missing decisions can degrade localization performance. Therefore, the system design must consider tradeoffs between energy consumption and localization performance. Models of energy consumption and localization performance were developed for one-dimensional and two-dimensional sensor arrays. These models were used in a multi-objective optimization method that balances energy consumption and localization performance. The Pareto-fronts generated by the multi-objective optimization method allow the system designer to make tradeoffs between energy consumption and localization performance.

The applications of positioning in wireless sensor networks include patient monitoring, asset tracking, and intelligent transportation including air traffic control. Popular methods are: received-signal-strength (RSS); time-of-arrival (TOA); time-difference-of-arrival (TDOA); and angle-of-arrival (AOA). Estimation is based on nonlinear equations constructed from measurements and knowledge of the anchor node geometry. In this thesis, anchor-based line-of-sight TOA and AOA are reviewed, and new techniques, namely DAOA (differential-angle-of-arrival) and hybrid TOA/DAOA are proposed for rotating laser implementation. For the TOA approach, a nonlinear Least Square Estimator (LSE) is applied to one- and two-dimensional systems, then the equations are linearized and solved by unconstrained/constrained LSE. This LSE procedure is also used for AOA. For DAOA, all the anchors are placed on a circle in order to simplify the solution, and then LSE is used to estimate an unlocalized node. The statistical accuracy of these methods, from simulation, is presented graphically for simple read-and-use application.

Wireless Sensor Network localization is an important aspect in sensor network applications such as tracking and monitoring. The general goal of localization is to obtain the best position estimation of each node under the constraints of the deploying cost, the capability of a sensor node platform, and the properties of the deploying environment. The purpose of this research is to investigate new algorithms and analyze the characteristics of their localization error in sensor network localization. In this dissertation, a new received signal strength (RSS) based algorithm RangeQ is presented. The simulation results show that the partial- range-aware algorithm can improve the localization accuracy by reducing position errors up to 50% of the previous range-free localization results. Based on the above algorithm, the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) has been derived for the localization problem. Simulation results show that RangeQ outperforms two range- free algorithms. A new anchor placement algorithm for optimal or near-optimal CRLB result is also presented.

In recent years, advances in signal processing have led to small, low power, inexpensive Wireless Sensor Network (WSN). The signal processing in WSN is different from the traditional wireless networks in two critical aspects: firstly, the signal processing in WSN is performed in a fully distributed manner, unlike in traditional wireless networks; secondly, due to the limited computation capabilities of sensor networks, it is essential to develop an energy and bandwidth efficient signal processing algorithms. Target localisation and tracking problems in WSNs have received considerable attention recently, driven by the necessity to achieve higher localisation accuracy, lower cost, and the smallest form factor. Received Signal Strength (RSS) based localisation techniques are at the forefront of tracking research applications. Since tracking algorithms have been attracting research and development attention recently, prolific literature and a wide range of proposed approaches regarding the topic have emerged. This thesis is devoted to discussing the existing WSN-based localisation and tracking approaches. This thesis includes five studies. The first study leads to the design and implementation of a triangulation-based localisation approach using RSS technique for indoor tracking applications. The presented work achieves low localisation error in complex environments by predicting the environmental characteristics among beacon nodes. The second study concentrates on investigating a fingerprinting localisation method for indoor tracking applications. The proposed approach offers reasonable localisation accuracy while requiring a short period of offline computation time. The third study focuses on designing and implementing a decentralised tracking approach for tracking multiple mobile targets with low resource requirements. Despite the interest in target tracking and localisation issues, there are few systems deployed using ZigBee network standard, and no tracking system has used the full features of the ZigBee network standard. Tracking through the ZigBee is a challenging task when the density of router and end-device nodes is low, due to the limited communication capabilities of end-device nodes. The fourth study focuses on developing and designing a practical ZigBee-based tracking approach. To save energy, different strategies were adopted. The fifth study outlines designing and implementing an energy-efficient approach for tracking applications. This study consists of two main approaches: a data aggregation approach, proposed and implemented in order to reduce the total number of messages transmitted over the network; and a prediction approach, deployed to increase the lifetime of the WSN. For evaluation purposes, two environmental models were used in this thesis: firstly, real experiments, in which the proposed approaches were implemented on real sensor nodes, to test the validity for the proposed approaches; secondly, simulation experiments, in which NS-2 was used to evaluate the power-consumption issues of the two approaches proposed in this thesis.
