A comprehensive look at reverse engineering as a legitimate learning, design, and troubleshooting tool This unique book examines the often underappreciated and occasionally maligned technique of reverse engineering. More than a shortcut for the lazy or unimaginative to reproduce an artless copy of an existing creation, reverse engineering is an essential brick – if not a keystone – in the pathway to a society’s technological advancement. Written by an engineer who began teaching after years in industry, Reverse Engineering reviews this meticulous analytical process with a breadth and depth as never before. Find out how to: Learn by “mechanical dissection” Deduce the role, purpose, and functionality of a designed entity Identify materials-of-construction and methods-of-manufacture by observation alone Assess the suitability of a design to purpose from form and fit The rich heritage of engineering breakthroughs enabled by reverse engineering is also discussed. This is not a dry textbook. It is the engaging and enlightening account of the journey of engineering from the astounding creations of ancient cultures to what, with the aid of reverse engineering, promises to be an even more astounding future! Coverage includes: Methods of product teardown Failure analysis and forensic engineering Deducing or inferring role, purpose, and functionality during reverse engineering The Antikythera mechanism Identifying materials-of-construction Inferring methods-of-manufacture or -construction Construction of Khufu’s pyramid Assessing design suitability Value and production engineering Reverse engineering of materials and substances Reverse engineering of broken, worn, or obsolete parts for remanufacture The law and the ethics of reverse engineering

Universal Principles of Design, Completely Updated and Expanded Third Edition is a comprehensive, cross-disciplinary encyclopedia, now with fully updated references for existing entries and expanded with 75 new entries to present a total of 200 laws, guidelines, and considerations that are important to successful design. Richly illustrated and easy to navigate, this essential design guide pairs clear explanations of every design concept with visual examples of the ideas applied in practice. Whether a marketing campaign or a museum exhibit, a video game or a complex control system, the design we see is the culmination of many concepts and practices brought together from a variety of disciplines. Because no one can be an expert on everything, designers have always had to scramble to find the information and know-how required to make a design work—until now. Each principle is presented in a two-page format. The first page contains a succinct definition and a full description of the principle, examples of and guidelines for its use, and side notes that provide elaborations and references. The second page contains visual examples and related graphics to support a deeper understanding of the principle. The book is organized alphabetically so that principles can be easily and quickly referenced by name. From 3D Projection to the Zeigarnick Effect, every major design concept is defined and illustrated, including these new additions: Feature creep Gamification Root cause Social trap Supernormal stimulus A landmark reference for designers, engineers, architects, and students, Universal Principles of Design has become the standard for anyone seeking to broaden and improve their design expertise, explore brainstorming ideas, and improve the quality of their design work. The titles in the Rockport Universal series offer comprehensive and authoritative information and edifying and inspiring visual examples on multidisciplinary subjects for designers, architects, engineers, students, and anyone who is interested in expanding and enriching their design knowledge.

This textbook explains Technology Roadmapping, in both its development and practice, and illustrates the underlying theory of, and empirical evidence for, technologic evolution over time afforded by this strategy. The book contains a rich set of examples and practical exercises from a wide array of domains in applied science and engineering such as transportation, energy, communications, and medicine. Professor de Weck gives a complete review of the principles, methods, and tools of technology management for organizations and technologically-enabled systems, including technology scouting, roadmapping, strategic planning, R&D project execution, intellectual property management, knowledge management, partnering and acquisition, technology transfer, innovation management, and financial technology valuation. Special topics also covered include Moore’s law, S-curves, the singularity and fundamental limits to technology. Ideal for university courses in engineering, management, and business programs, as well as self-study or online learning for professionals in a range of industries, readers of this book will learn how to develop and deploy comprehensive technology roadmaps and R&D portfolios on diverse topics of their choice. Introduces a unique framework, Advanced Technology Roadmap Architecture (ATRA), for developing quantitative technology roadmaps and competitive R&D portfolios through a lucid and rigorous step-by-step approach; Elucidates the ATRA framework through analysis which was validated on an actual $1 billion R&D portfolio at Airbus, leveraging a pedagogy significantly beyond typical university textbooks and problem sets; Reinforces concepts with in-depth case studies, practical exercises, examples, and thought experiments interwoven throughout the text; Maximizes reader competence on how to explicitly link strategy, finance, and technology. The book follows and supports the MIT Professional Education Courses “Management of Technology: Roadmapping & Development,” https://professional.mit.edu/course-catalog/management-technology-roadmapping-development and “Management of Technology: Strategy & Portfolio Analysis” https://professional.mit.edu/course-catalog/management-technology-strategy-portfolio-analysis

The voices in this book offer a multi-perspectival approach to Africa, focusing on the skills and the knowledge underpinning visual cultural expressions ranging from Akan symbolism to embodied performances by dancers and storytellers, even re-designed models of Western cars. Educators, designers, artists, critics, curators, and custodians based both in Africa and in Europe are configuring spaces for public, private, institutional as well as digital conversation – whether through pottery or portraiture, furniture or film, shoes or selfies, buildings or books. Readers are encouraged to question how African visual cultures are both ‘in’ and ‘of’; identifying and confrontational; post- and decolonial; preserved and practised; old and new; borrowed and authentic; composite and complete; rooted and soaring. Disciplines being engaged include visual culture studies, media studies, performance studies, orature, literature, art and design – as well as their histories. The editors Mary Clare Kidenda, Lize Kriel and Ernst Wagner represent three nodes in the Exploring Visual Cultures north-south collaborative network: The Technical University of Kenya, the University of Pretoria in South Africa and Munich Academy of Fine Arts in Germany.

Materials Inspired By Biology written by James L. Thomas (Ph. D.) and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Medical categories.
Continued interest in the field of biologically inspired materials is strongly motivated by the fact that the nanoscale and microscale organization found in biological materials often leads to exceptional macroscopic materials properties. The ability to mimic these structures should lead to new synthetic materials with similarly remarkable behavior in both biomedical and materials arenas. This has led to an enormous amount of research in a variety of materials areas, including those aimed at: 1) unique ceramics or composites for use in biomaterials, magnetic and optical applications; 2) self-assembled biopolymeric systems for use in biomaterials and biosensor applications; and 3) colloidal and amphiphilic systems for application in biomedicine, nanotechnology and biosensors. Accordingly, this volume brings together a broad range of researchers whose interests span the full breadth of biology, and in addition, those who find different inspiration in biology itself. For some, that inspiration is in the creation of new materials that have important biological (especially biomedical) applications. For others, it is the imitation of the behavior of a biological material, molecule or process that is of interest. Finally, with increasing frequency, researchers are drawing inspiration from the synthetic pathways that biology uses, exploiting these pathways, and modifying them chemically or genetically to make entirely novel molecules and materials. Biologically inspired materials is a rapidly evolving arena of materials science research, and the work presented here reflects recent advances and new perspectives in the field. Topics include: tissue engineering and biomaterials; novel biomimeticand bioinspired polymers; biomineralization, colloidal and templated materials; and amphiphilic membranes and surfaces.
