Many of the world's economic ills - short-termism, compulsory growth pressure, cyclical recessions, unrelenting concentration of wealth, and erosion of social capital can be traced to our competitive money system, in which there is built-in economic scarcity and never enough money for people to pay off their debts. We need an economic system that is both cooperative and competitive, with each balancing and complimenting the other. Lietaer and Dunne tell how such a balanced system can be created and, in fact, how it is already being built in many places around the world. Individual citizens, entrepreneurs, businesses, communities, and governments are creating new cooperative money systems that link unused resources with unmet needs. Over the past 30 years there has been a tremendous growth of cooperative currencies from fewer than 100 in 1980 to over 4,000 today. But we need many more of them spread more consistently all over the globe. We also need more large-scale cooperative currencies. The emergent cooperative currency movement needs to grow up. Dodging the dogma of both left or right Rethinking Money provides the roadmap for this to happen.

If you are getting older (or hope to), this book is for you. It will save you and your family money, restless nights, and heartbreak. Do I really need a living will? What are living trusts and should I attend a "free seminar"? How can I protect myself from scams and identity theft? How can I care for my aged parents? What are "assisted living facilities" and what about nursing homes? How can I recognize elder abuse and what about guns in the home? How can I fight age discrimination? What will be my insurance needs? What are reverse mortgages, Roth IRAs, durable powers of attorney, and disgruntled heirs? Will I have to give up both driving and sex? Need I worry about estate taxes? Should I avoid Probate? Most important, how can I get my family (and myself) to discuss the real problems that will face us? Here they come, ready or not. Not to worry. You don't have to read the entire book. What you need to know right now is in the first four chapters. The rest can wait. This is a serious book about serious times, but, if you're not up for an occasional joke, or poem, just put it back. "Alive and Kicking is an engaging, even entertaining and uplifting, book about a subject most of us who are getting on in life often avoid: arranging our affairs for our latter years to avoid medical, financial, and legal troubles. I will use it myself and recommend it to patients, friends, and loved ones." Andrew Weil, M.D. Healthy Aging "An encyclopedic legal reference with the down-home philosophy and wit of a Will Rogers. Astoundingly exhaustive in its range of subjects, the book provides accurate, to-the-point legal advice wryly enriched by poetry, humor, and existential musings." Charles Sabatino, principal author, American Bar Association's Legal Guide for Older Americans "Kenney Hegland is simply one of the best writers on any law faculty." Thomas E. Sullivan, Dean, College of Law, University of Minnesota"Alive and Kicking: Legal Advice for Boomers isn't afraid to crack a joke or bust our a poem now and again, giving a different and attractive flavor, making it highly recommended for anyone who is rapidly approaching retirement age and wants to be prepared for it in the modern world. Also recommended to community library law shelves." Wisconsin Bookwatch

Students taking Elder Law or Health Law might find this book helpful to get a quick introduction to topics you don't cover in your course or as a second opinion for those you do. As a savvy law professor, even if you don't teach those courses, particularly if you don't teach those courses, you get tough questions from friends and relatives -- "Should I have a living trust? What's a health care power of attorney? What's a disgruntled heir?" Here's help for dire times. Written by a law professor with the practical insights of an elder law lawyer, it covers everything from retirement (finances, housing, Medicare) to advance directives, elder abuse to nursing homes, scams, bill collectors, age discrimination, to disability in the family and hospice. It even covers sex, driving, and what it feels like growing old, having everyone start calling you "dear" and giving you, without even asking, those dreaded discounts. This book is a rewrite of Alive and Kicking: Legal Advice for Boomers by Kenney F. Hegland and Robert B. Fleming. "[A]n engaging, even entertaining and uplifting, book about a subject most of us who are getting on in life often avoid: arranging our affairs for our latter years to avoid medical, financial, and legal troubles. Rethinking Money Debt And Finance After The Crisis written by Melinda Cooper and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015 with Business & Economics categories.
The financial crisis of 2007-8 has been widely understood as a result of the financial system's exceeding its proper place in society; the system became unbalanced, unsustainable, and deprived of a solid foundation. Even as capitalist finance seeks to reinvent itself in the wake of massive upheaval, critics continue to portray the financial system as fundamentally irrational--an unstable, destructive inventor of fictitious money. Characterizing finance in this way, however, neglects the growing connection between the worlds of high finance and consumer credit. The essays in this special issue take the financial crisis as an opportunity for much-needed conceptual innovation. Its contributors move beyond strictly moralistic criticisms of financialization to rethink core economic categories such as money, speculation, measure, value, and the wage, as well as the relationship among labor, finance, and money. Melinda Cooper is an Australian Research Council Future Fellow in the Department of Sociology and Social Policy at the University of Sydney. She is the author of Clinical Labor: Tissue Donors and Research Subjects in the Global Bioeconomy, also published by Duke University Press. Martijn Konings is Senior Lecturer and Australian Research Council DECRA Fellow in the Department of Political Economy at the University of Sydney. He is the author of The Development of American Finance. Contributors: Lisa Adkins, Fiona Allon, Dick Bryan, Melinda Cooper, Marieke de Goede, Chris Jefferis, Martijn Konings, Randy Martin, Michael Rafferty

“Twenty years of hindsight prove how deeply Tapscott understood the impact the Internet would have on the way we live, work, play and learn. This important book, now updated, is just as relevant today as it was then.” John Chambers, Chairman and CEO, Cisco With a new foreword by Eric Schmidt, Chief Executive of Google Two decades ago, The Digital Economy changed the way the world thought about the Web and Internet. While everyone else was in awe of “websites” and "dot coms," Don Tapscott was among the first people to argue that the Internet would fully transform the nature of business and government. It goes without saying that his predictions were spot on. Now, in this new edition of his classic work, the New York Times bestselling author provides topical updates with a sweeping new analysis of how the Internet has changed business and society in the last 20 years, covering: Natural frictions between present-day Industrial Capitalism and the Digital Economy The radical effects of the Internet on traditional corporate structures and systems Dramatic changes in business collaboration and culture thanks to social media The rise of web-based analytics and how they have transformed business functions Government transparency, citizen empowerment, and the creation of public value Teaching and learning—revolutionary developments driven by digital content When Tapscott was writing the original edition in 1994, he was living in a world where Netscape had been just introduced as go-to browser, websites didn’t do transactions, dial-up was the only way to get online, and mobile phones sightings were rare. Google, YouTube, eBay, Facebook, Twitter? They didn’t exist. Preserving all the original text as it appeared 20 years ago, this new edition includes detailed essays ending each chapter—Tapscott’s highly informed reflections on his predictions, along with new forecasts of where the digital world is headed. Praise for the new edition of The Digital Economy “1994 was a good year. Netscape Navigator and The Digital Economy. With this anniversary edition, Tapscott provides lucid insights for the next stage of these amazing times.” Marc Andreessen, Co-founder and General Partner, Andreessen Horowitz “Brilliant. Governments can learn from The Digital Economy how to democratize access to prosperity, minimize social and economic divides and transform government and democracy for the 21st Century.” Enrique Peña Nieto, President of Mexico “We’re now into three decades of terrific insights and analysis from Don Tapscott about the digital revolution! Read this book!” Ajay Banga, President and CEO, Mastercard
