Until about 1986, feminists generally considered modernism a reactionary, misogynist, and hegemonic mire not worth investigating. Since then enough studies of modernism have appeared that 17 feminist critics can now review and debate their treatment of the period. They evaluate the progress and goals of the new era of modernist scholarship. As the authors in this volume suggest, instead of condemning writers for not practicing or portraying an acceptable politics of gender, we ought instead to show how their assumptions about the nature of the sexes inform their texts, both in their creation and in their reception. This also allows examination of the complex and changing relationship between human subjectivity and aesthetics. This volume is a highly reflective dialogue, introspective and evaluative, at a moment of crisis within modernist studies and feminist studies. The analysis of critical work on early-twentieth-century literature not only helps reread and redefine a definition of modernism; it also intends to redirect and reintegrate feminist theory.

"Treating the connections between literature and its cultural and material contexts, Challenging Modernism concentrates on English and American responses to the interwar European terrain. In a range of essays the contributors examine twentieth-century writers' deployment of contemporary political, imperialist, and nationalist discourses to define Self and Other along new lines; they probe writers' engagement with such issues as sexual reproduction and the fate of workers on the British World War II home front. Setting both canonical works of literature and previously overlooked texts in freshly examined cultural and historical contexts, they revisit modernism to expose new facets of its political, cultural and sexual struggles."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. This vanguard collection of original and in-depth essays explores the intricate interplay of the aesthetic and psychological domains during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and considers the reasons why a common Modernist project took shape when and in the circumstances that it did. These changes occurred precisely when the distinctively modern disciplines of psychology, psychiatry, and psychoanalysis established their "scientific” foundations and achieved the forms in which we largely know them today. This volume examines the dense web of connections joining the aesthetic and psychological realms in the modern era, charting historically the emergence of the ongoing modern discussion surrounding such issues as identity-formation, sexuality, and the unconscious. The contributors form a distinguished and diversified group of scholars, who write about a wide range of cultural fields, including philosophy, the novel and poetry, drama, dance, film and photography, as well as medicine, psychology, and the occult sciences.

Contributors from the UK, Canada, and the US demonstrate how different methodologies and approaches can be used to reveal the woman artist as a "subject" of histories of 20th-century art. They offer specific case studies of historical narratives, artworks, and individual artistic projects within modernism. Topics include women artists and suffrage cultures, gender and representation in the Harlem Renaissance, and the question of decadence in 1923. Paper edition (unseen), $27.95.
