“Ernst van de Wetering's wonderful book has taken us further than almost any study over the past twenty years, towards an understanding of the machinery of Rembrandt's genius. No one attempting to write about Rembrandt in the future will be able to do so without taking this fine work into account.” —Simon Schama "Who would not have wanted to look over Rembrandt's shoulder while he painted? Among the countless books on Rembrandt, that by Ernst van de Wetering comes closest to conveying something of this experience because the author combines the qualifications of a trained connoisseur and of a practising painter." —Ernst Gombrich

Rembrandt’s extraordinary paintings of female nudes—Andromeda, Susanna, Diana and her Nymphs, Danaë, Bathsheba—as well as his etchings of nude women, have fascinated many generations of art lovers and art historians. But they also elicited vehement criticism when first shown, described as against-the-grain, anticlassical—even ugly and unpleasant. However, Rembrandt chose conventional subjects, kept close to time-honored pictorial schemes, and was well aware of the high prestige accorded to the depiction of the naked female body. Why, then, do these works deviate so radically from the depictions of nude women by other artists? To answer this question Eric Jan Sluijter, in Rembrandt and the Female Nude, examines Rembrandt’s paintings and etchings against the background of established pictorial traditions in the Netherlands and Italy. Exploring Rembrandt’s intense dialogue with the works of predecessors and peers, Sluijter demonstrates that, more than any other artist, Rembrandt set out to incite the greatest possible empathy in the viewer, an approach that had far-reaching consequences for the moral and erotic implications of the subjects Rembrandt chose to depict. In this richly illustrated study, Sluijter presents an innovative approach to Rembrandt’s views on the art of painting, his attitude towards antiquity and Italian art of the Renaissance, his sustained rivalry with the works of other artists, his handling of the moral and erotic issues inherent in subjects with female nudes, and the nature of his artistic choices.

This is the first monograph devoted to Rembrandt's etched portraits of himself and his contemporaries. Between 1633 and 1665, Rembrandt etched less than two dozen formal portraits, yet this small body of work includessome of his most finely crafted and widely sought-after prints. Rembrandt depicted influential preachers of the Remonstrant, Reformed and Mennonite faiths as well as prominent citizens such as the tax administrator Jan Wtenbogaert, the wealthy connoisseur Jan Six, the physician Arnout Tholinxand the landscape painter Jan Asselijn. Most of these men participated in a circle of artists, poets and patrons who thought of themselves as a "Dutch Parnassus." For this community of art lovers, the celebration of individual character and accomplishment, in products ranging from imposing portrait sculptures to witty occasional verses, was a central preoccupation. This book brings together contextual evidence such as preparatory studies, inscribed copies, and literary responses of Rembrandt's etched portraits.

Rembrandt's paintings have been admired throughout centuries because of their artistic freedom. But Rembrandt was also a craftsman whose painting technique was rooted the tradition. This sweeping examination of Rembrandt's oeuvre is the result of a lifelong search for the artist's working methods, his intellectual approach to painting and the way in which his studio functioned. Ernst van de Wetering demonstrates how this knowledge can be used to tackle questions about authenticity and other art-historical issues. Approximately 350 illustrations, half of which are reproduced in colour, make this book into a monumental tribute to one of the worlds most important painters.

The prodigious talent of Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn (ca. 1606–1669), along with his disregard for many of the artistic conventions of his day, astonished, delighted, and dismayed his contemporaries. The full gamut of their reactions is revealed in these three biographies, which were first published in the decades following Rembrandt’s death and appear here in English for the first time in their entirety. These extraordinary documents, by German, Italian, and Dutch authors schooled in the conventions of neoclassicism, provide richly varied accounts of Rembrandt’s impact on the art world of his time. While the authors for the most part acknowledge his brilliance, sometimes grudgingly, they are wary of Rembrandt’s reliance on personal talent rather than on the rules of art. So, too, are they annoyed at his skill in manipulating the art market. Filled with colorful and amusing anecdotes, these critiques, handsomely complemented here with vivid illustrations, bring into sharper focus the originality and psychological acuity that remain Rembrandt’s trademark to this day. An informative introduction by the scholar Charles Ford situates these texts in the art-historical context of the seventeenth century.

Rembrandt written by Josef Israels and has been published by Namaskar Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-04-17 with Art categories.
Rembrandt by Josef Israels is a compelling examination of one of the most renowned painters in Western art history, delving into the life, artistry, and enduring legacy of Rembrandt van Rijn. Israels, an esteemed painter and art historian himself, offers readers an intimate and insightful exploration of Rembrandt's profound impact on the art world, with a particular focus on the emotional depth and dramatic use of light that defines his masterpieces. The book chronicles the journey of Rembrandt from his early years in Leiden, where he honed his craft, to his later life in Amsterdam, where he achieved acclaim and fortune, only to face personal challenges that would shape his later work. Israels captures this evolution not only through the lens of Rembrandt’s artistic endeavors but also by providing a vivid portrait of the socio-political and cultural milieu of 17th-century Netherlands. The reader gains an understanding of how the Historical context significantly influenced the themes, subjects, and techniques employed in Rembrandt's oeuvre. One of the standout features of Israels’ writing is the meticulous attention he pays to analyzing specific works of art. Each chapter concentrates on key paintings, such as ""The Night Watch,"" ""The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp,"" and ""The Jewish Bride,"" showcasing the richness of Rembrandt’s use of chiaroscuro and his innovative approach to composition. Israels discusses how Rembrandt's ability to convey emotion through facial expressions and gestures distinguishes his work from that of his contemporaries. The author’s insights reveal how the artist's unique ability to portray the human condition — with all its complexities and nuances — resonates powerfully, making his work timeless and universal. Beyond technical analysis, Rembrandt engages with the philosophical questions embedded in the artist’s work. Israels probes the themes of light and darkness, both literally and metaphorically, exploring how Rembrandt's use of shadow creates a dramatic contrast that conveys the dualities of existence — joy and sorrow, life and death, the divine and the earthly. This thematic exploration allows readers to appreciate the profound emotional and spiritual dimensions of Rembrandt's art and invites contemplation on how these universal experiences transcend time and culture. Furthermore, Israels paints a portrait of Rembrandt the man, exploring his relationships, struggles, and triumphs. His personal life, particularly his encounters with love, loss, and the challenges of financial hardship, add layers of poignancy to the narrative, illustrating how his lived experiences profoundly influenced his artistic expressions. This blend of biography and art appreciation makes the book not only an homage to Rembrandt’s genius but also a poignant human story of an artist’s journey. As readers traverse through the pages of Josef Israels’ Rembrandt, they are invited to reflect on the role of the artist in society and the power of art to convey the human experience. With this engaging narrative, Israels ignites a renewed appreciation for Rembrandt's work, emphasizing its relevance in contemporary discussions about art, emotion, and the shared struggles of humanity. Overall, Rembrandt stands out as a significant contribution to art literature, providing both scholars and casual readers alike with a rich understanding of a master whose legacy continues to inspire generations. Josef Israels’ eloquent prose, combined with his expert knowledge, brings to life the brilliance of Rembrandt, ensuring that his artistic vision remains vibrant and meaningful in the hearts and minds of readers today.

Though Rembrandt's study of the Bible has long been recognized, his interest in secular literature has been relatively neglected. In this volume, Amy Golahny uses a 1656 inventory to reconstruct Rembrandt's library, discovering anew how his reading of history contributed to his creative process. In the end, Golahny places Rembrandt in the learned vernacular culture of seventeenth-century Holland, painting a picture of a pragmatic reader whose attention to historical texts strengthened his rivalry with Rubens for visual drama and narrative erudition.
