In Religious Language and Complementarity, the author develops an analogy between the structure of the Copenhagen Interpretation of quantum mechanics and theological systems, with particular emphasis on the theology of correlation of Paul Tillich. The author points out the limits of this analogy and evaluates the effectiveness of the analogy as a defense against the charge that the prima facie inconsistency of traditional Christian theological systems is a genuine inconsistency. Contents: "Theology and Falsification" Revisited; The Language of Immutable Attributes and the Language of Dialogue; Christian Theology and the Two Languages: A Brief Historical Survey; The Orwellian Challenge: Assumptions and Options; Omnipotence and Dialogue; Theology in the Language of Immutable Attributes; Theology in the Language of Dialogue; Bultmann's Existentialist Alternative; The Copenhagen Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics; Tillich's Theology of Correlation; Theology of Correlation and the Copenhagen Interpretation: A Cogent Analogy?; "As If" Interpretations and Cognitive Significance; Recapitulation.

Scientist and philosophers have more in common than might first appear, especially when the language used in the two disciplines receives a closer scrutiny, Ian G. Barbour treats three scientific view-points that can clarify the specific nature of religious language. The first theme is the diverse function of language. Science and religion each has its own task and its own applicable logic and language. Religious symbols and their expression in myths imply a perspective and interpretation of human history and experience, directing attention to particular patterns in events. The second theme is the role of models in both scientific and religious language. What the "billiard ball model" of a gas and the biblical model of personal God both achieve is an interpretation of experience, a restructuring of how one sees the world. The third area in which science and religion have a common stake is the role of paradigms. Paradigms are standard examples of scientific investigation which embody a set of assumptions and becomes a research tradition until replaced by other assumptions. Religions has its paradigms, like the covenant of Sinai, wich have issued in traditions. Dr. Barbour concludes that scientific and religious language bother offer knowledge of reality based on experience. In determining the appropriate data and criteria for this experience the philosopher of religion can profit greet from the work of the scientist.

Ian G. Barbour is the internationally acknowledged pioneer in the field of 'science and religion'. Although public opinion is often swayed by strident voices which attempt to place science and religion in conflict or keep them totally isolated, Barbour's voluminous contributions over the past fifty years have carved out a trusted pathway to constructive dialogue and creative mutual interaction between science and religion.Fifty Years in Science and Religion brings together nineteen leading scholars in the field to offer an appreciative yet critical assessment of the impact of Barbour's work on science and religion and to point ahead towards future critical areas, goals and tasks that await new research and visionary exploration. This book includes a unique autobiography by Barbour in which for the first time he shares and reflects on his life and work, and a detailed bibliography of Barbour's works. Together, the authors demonstrate how Barbour's writings and the hundreds of scholars who have now become part of the field have changed the course of intellectual history in the West by making possible and necessary a truly constructive engagement between science and religion in the context of inter-religious dialogue and the global human and environmental challenges of our time.

Public Theology In An Age Of World Christianity written by Paul S. Chung and has been published by Palgrave MacMillan this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-04-15 with Religion categories.
This book aims to rearticulate and reinterpret a Christian concept of God’s mission and evangelization in light of the universal, irregular, and transversal horizon of God’s narrative as it pertains to the realities of public sphere. Paul Chung maintains that mission serves the Word of God which is revealed in Jesus Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit for all. It is salient to develop a theology of Trinitarian mission through the perspective of God’s living “word-event” in a hermeneutical, intercultural fashion. Here, a Trinitarian concept of missio Dei is deepened and refurbished in light of God as the Subject of speaking: through Israel, the church, and the face of innocent victims and religious outsiders. This perspective contextualizes and widens the mission of God’s narrative and deepens its universality in light of the word event.
