"Real World Globalization is an essential guide to rapidly-changing trends in global trade, investment, labor relations, and economic development. Its 48 articles provide jargon-free introductions to trade and financial institutions, work in the global economy, international debt, and the global environment. An estensive chapter on economic development critically analyzes neoliberal strategies in countries from Mexico to Korea, and features a debate on the significance of rich nations' agricultural subsidies. The eighth edition also includes a new chapter on the political economy of war and imperialism, with articles on the consequences of the U.S. military buildup for corporations, the U.S. working class, and the global environment. A final chapter, also new, examines alternatives to neoliberalism, from social democracy in Sweden, to democratic decentralization in Kerala, to factory seizures by workers in Argentina." taken from back cover

The Digital Frontier written by Sangeet Kumar and has been published by Indiana University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-05-25 with Political Science categories.

The global web and its digital ecosystem can be seen as tools of emancipation, communication, and spreading knowledge or as means of control, fueled by capitalism, surveillance, and geopolitics. The Digital Frontier interrogates the world wide web and the digital ecosystem it has spawned to reveal how their conventions, protocols, standards, and algorithmic regulations represent a novel form of global power. Sangeet Kumar shows the operation of this power through the web's "infrastructures of control" visible at sites where the universalizing imperatives of the web run up against local values, norms, and cultures. These include how the idea of the "global common good" is used as a ruse by digital oligopolies to expand their private enclosures, how seemingly collaborative spaces can simultaneously be exclusionary as they regulate legitimate knowledge, how selfhood is being redefined online along Eurocentric ideals, and how the web's political challenge is felt differentially by sovereign nation states. In analyzing this new modality of cultural power in the global digital ecosystem, The Digital Frontier is an important read for scholars, activists, academics and students inspired by the utopian dream of a truly representative global digital network.

Introduction To Development Economics written by Marco Missaglia and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-03-21 with Business & Economics categories.

This textbook provides an introduction to development economics that examines both the drivers of economic growth and sustainable development. It initially presents development economics within a historical and political context, before widening its attention to theories of growth and development, the importance of the Sustainable Development Goals, the imbalance of power between the Global North and South, global development policies, and the role of international finance in development. Rather than focusing primarily on neoclassical growth theories, qualitative and quantitative aspects of the development process are both highlighted. This book aims to give readers a broad understanding of the economic drivers of development and the economic theories that underpin them. It will be relevant to undergraduate and postgraduate students interested in development economics and sustainable development.

Diplomacy And Global Governance written by Thomas Nowotny and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-02-06 with Political Science categories.

Traditional diplomacy is based on the notion of competing nation-states, each attempting to maximize its autonomy and independence. This notion is at odds with today's world in which even mighty states are enmeshed in a web of interdependence. Much of the world's economy, information, industry, and culture have become global. Given these massive changes, argues Thomas Nowotny, much of traditional diplomacy has become redundant and sometimes counterproductive. Notwithstanding worldwide interdependence, states still anchor this complex global system. In a timelier version of their craft, diplomats retain an important function in safeguarding and shaping that worldwide interdependence. They are trained to transform differences into consensus and to navigate zones of conflict. But to do so effectively, and to meet today's challenges, they will have to adjust their ways and institutions. Nowotny bases his arguments on his unique experiences in internal organizational politics and in bilateral and multilateral international diplomacy, as well as on his theoretical reflections as an academic. His work aims to merge lessons from these distinct spheres into one comprehensive whole, intertwining practice and theory. To affect outcomes one, thus, has to deal with practice and theory at the same time. This is what Novotny aims to achieve, and he succeeds admirably.

Transnational Agrarian Movements Confronting Globalization written by Saturnino M. Borras, Jr. and has been published by Wiley-Blackwell this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-11-10 with Business & Economics categories.

Readers of this book will encounter peasants and farmers who struggle at home and traverse national borders to challenge the World Trade Organization and other powerful global institutions. Here are activists in Brazil who uproot plots of genetically modified soybeans, forest dwellers in Indonesia who chop down rubber plantations to cultivate rice to feed their families, ‘runaway villages’ in China that take up arms to resist corrupt officials, and Mexican migrants who, having exited in desperation, return from abroad to transform their communities. Little-known transnational agrarian movements of the early twentieth century share the stage with more recent, high-profile global alliances, such as Vía Campesina. Rather than simply celebrating a dynamic sector of international civil society, the authors tackle thorny questions of successes and failures, ethical and political dilemmas, troubled alliances with NGOs, protest repertoires, and representation claims. The essays in Transnational Agrarian Movements Confronting Globalization analyze contemporary collective action in all its complexity, acknowledging ambiguities and contradictions, posing challenging questions, and providing concrete strategies for scholars and activists. Contributors include: Suraya Afiff, Xochitl Bada, Brenda Baletti, Saturnino M. Borras Jr, Marc Edelman, Jonathan Fox, Harriet Friedmann, Tamara M. Johnson, Cristóbal Kay, Kevin Malseed, Philip McMichael, Amber McNair, Peter Newell, Nancy Lee Peluso, Noer Fauzi Rachman, Ian Scoones, Kathy Le Mons Walker and Wendy Wolford.
