Nuclear Reactor Safety aims to put the nuclear hazard in perspective by providing an objective overall technical review of the field. It focuses on reactor accidents and their consequences. The technical arguments will be concerned broadly with reactor accident conditions and will deal with both the arrangements necessary to prevent any dangerous diversion from normal operation and to ameliorate the consequences if such a diversion should occur. The book is organized into three parts. Part I describes the nature of fission products and the hazards to man and his environment resulting from the uncontrolled release of fission products in accident conditions. Part II discusses a quantitative approach to reactor safety assessment and the quantification of vessel integrity. Part III deals with the basic principles of analysis and assessment of reactor safety, and then considers the specific safety problems of thermal and fast reactors in detail. This book is intended for two types of readers. First are technicians, those engaged in nuclear engineering: designers, constructors, and operators of nuclear stations, as well as those who would make a career in nuclear safety. Second are those (not necessarily scientists) who are tasked with making decisions in the field of energy use and allocation, or are concerned with environmental matters.

Nuclear Reactor Safety is an introductory book on nuclear reactors and safety. The book begins with introduction to the applications of nuclear energy in power production, industry, medicine and food preservation, followed by the different types of reactors. Then it deals with the different safety principles, safety approaches and quality assurance and engineered safety of Nuclear reactors. Safety regulation and practices in the Indian NPPs have been detailed out for a good understanding. Finally it introduces the reader to the passive safety approaches being utilized and contemplated for new designs besides sharing some aspects of public acceptance of nuclear energy. Basic reactor physics and analysis of some exceptional events in nuclear reactors are given in the annexures. FROM THE EXPERTS... "Covers both in breadth and depth a range of key areas that are needed to understand the complex area of nuclear safety. Draws on experience and an appropriate range of reactor types and previous incidents." Dr Paul Norman, University of Birmingham, England "This book addresses a very important issue in Nuclear Engineering as Nuclear Safety is an important topic in all undergraduate and graduate courses in Nuclear Engineering." Prof. Dr Ugur Guven, UN CSSTEAP and Consultant "Academic professionals teaching this course and industry professionals engaged in design, production and testing of components for nuclear power plants can benefit from the book." L V Krishnan, Former Director, Health & Safety, Department of Atomic Energy, India "This book on Nuclear Reactor Safety should be an excellent reading material especially for the students or new entrepreneurs in the field." Dr V Jagannathan, Former Head, Light Water Reactors Physics Section, Reactor Physics Design, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai, India

Fast Reactor Safety deals with safety design criteria and methodology for fast reactors. Topics covered include safety evaluation methods, system disturbances, containment, and licensing. The characteristics of fast reactors, including heat ratings and coolants, are also discussed. Comprised of six chapters, this book opens with an overview of methods used to evaluate nuclear safety, along with neutron kinetics, thermal and feedback effects, and fault tree analysis. The reader is then introduced to possible system disturbances in relation to three distinct fast reactor systems: liquid-metal-cooled fast breeder reactors, gas-cooled fast breeder reactors, and steam-cooled fast breeder reactors. The next chapter looks at safety criteria that are set to define the design of a safe plant, together with the safety features that might be included. The remaining chapters focus on the particular problems of a sodium-cooled design; containment building and primary circuit and vessel containment; and licensing of the plant. This monograph is intended for graduates and undergraduates in nuclear engineering who are attending courses in reactor safety.

Nuclear Reactor Safety offers a comprehensive exploration of the measures ensuring the safety of modern nuclear power plants. It delves into both the inherent safety features built into reactor designs and the engineered safety systems that respond to abnormal conditions. The book emphasizes the importance of understanding reactor physics, thermal hydraulics, and control systems to appreciate how these facilities mitigate risks and protect the environment. For instance, it highlights how negative temperature coefficients in reactor designs help limit the consequences of potential malfunctions. The book traces the evolution of nuclear safety standards, shaped by pivotal events like Three Mile Island and Chernobyl, which led to enhanced regulations and more robust safety features. A key focus is on probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) methodologies, showcasing how they are applied to analyze accident sequences and their potential consequences. Furthermore, it covers the design and operation of various reactor types, from pressurized water reactors (PWRs) to advanced reactor concepts, and examines emergency core cooling systems (ECCS) and containment structures. This book distinguishes itself by offering an integrated treatment of deterministic and probabilistic safety analysis techniques. It provides a valuable resource for engineering students, nuclear engineers, and regulatory personnel, offering an up-to-date overview of nuclear reactor safety principles and practices, crucial for regulatory compliance and the development of future reactor technologies.
