Rapid Manufacturing is a term that embraces rapid prototyping and rapid tooling. Rapid prototyping is an exciting new technology for quickly creating physical models and functional prototypes directly from CAD models. Rapid tooling generally concerns the production of tooling using parts manufactured by rapid prototyping. Rapid prototyping and rapid tooling are means for compressing the time-to-market of products and, as such are competitiveness enhancing technologies. The book describes the characteristics and capabilities of the main known rapid prototyping processes. It covers in detail commercially available processes, such as: - Stereolithography (SLA); - Selective Laser Sintering (SLS); - Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM); - Solid Ground Curing (SGC); - Laminated Object Manufacturing (LOM) and provides information on several other processes still under development. The book discusses various direct and indirect methods of producing soft tooling, firm tooling (or bridge tooling) and hard tooling based on rapid prototyping. The discussion is wide- ranging and not found in other books published to-date. Also special to the book is material on process optimisation. This was derived from work at the authors'Centre and is not available in other texts. The book places a strong emphasis on practical applications, devoting special chapters to both the applications of rapid prototyping and rapid tooling. The book contains an abundance of photographs and diagrams, some in colour, to illustrate clearly the principles of the machines and processes involved. The book does not require any special background. It should be of interest to manufacturing, industrial, production, mechanical and materials engineers wishing to up date themselves on some of the most important developments in modern manufacture. (The authors are from the Manufacturing Engineering Centre, which conducts leading-edge research into advanced manufacturing as well as providinga commercial rapid prototyping and tooling service to several hundred industrial customers).

Rapid Manufacturing is a new area of manufacturing developed from a family of technologies known as Rapid Prototyping. These processes have already had the effect of both improving products and reducing their development time; this in turn resulted in the development of the technology of Rapid Tooling, which implemented Rapid Prototyping techniques to improve its own processes. Rapid Manufacturing has developed as the next stage, in which the need for tooling is eliminated. It has been shown that it is economically feasible to use existing commercial Rapid Prototyping systems to manufacture series parts in quantities of up to 20,000 and customised parts in quantities of hundreds of thousands. This form of manufacturing can be incredibly cost-effective and the process is far more flexible than conventional manufacturing. Rapid Manufacturing: An Industrial Revolution for the Digital Age addresses the academic fundamentals of Rapid Manufacturing as well as focussing on case studies and applications across a wide range of industry sectors. As a technology that allows manufacturers to create products without tools, it enables previously impossible geometries to be made. This book is abundant with images depicting the fantastic array of products that are now being commercially manufactured using these technologies. Includes contributions from leading researchers working at the forefront of industry. Features detailed illustrations throughout. Rapid Manufacturing: An Industrial Revolution for the Digital Age is a groundbreaking text that provides excellent coverage of this fast emerging industry. It will interest manufacturing industry practitioners in research and development, product design and materials science, as well as having a theoretical appeal to researchers and post-graduate students in manufacturing engineering, product design, CAD/CAM and CIFM.

Rapid Manufacturing is seen as one of the most important emerging technologies that will drive the future manufacturing economy. Approximately 30% of the Rapid Manufacturing systems are installed in Europe, and the revenues generated by RM products and services have almost doubled in the period 2004-2009 to reach almost 1 M . This makes RM products and services an already important, and with clear potential, part of the EU industry. The objective of the KTRM EU project is to contribute to a coherent training program that will allow the participants to improve the methodology and system for Rapid Manufacturing that implies design, development and manufacturing of products in aluminium, titanium, steel, steel and polymers on RM technologies. KTRM will develop an elearning platform and training materials for those working in the Manufacturing industry on Rapid Manufacturing methods. The project will use a 'blended learning' approach, offering interactive online modules and supporting 'hard-copy' resources. The course will have four entry points: processes, materials, design and business models. A consortium has been drawn together of European RTOs and companies bringing together a wealth of expertise and resources in Rapid Manfacturing. The overall impact of KTRM is to enable SME to be able to initiate the implantation and standardisation of the process development and to know the abilities, advantages and limitations of the designed Rapid Manufacturing methodology.

Explores the state-of-the-art rapid prototyping manufacturing method and introduces the newest resulting materials. Rapid prototyping, also called solid free form fabrication, has grown into a mature manufacturing method used in a variety of fields. It is used in numerous materials systems that often cannot be processed by any other means. Furthermore, rapid prototyping has become a method by which new materials and composites can be formed. Recent examples involve the combining of preprocess processing with metal and alloy infiltration to form composite structure. This volume will also cover successful industrial and commercial uses of rapid prototyping and solid free form fabrication.

Additive Manufacturing (AM) is the term used for layer-oriented or generative manufacturing, which was introduced at the end of the 1980s as Rapid Prototyping. Within the last 20 years it has developed dramatically. Today it is not only a valuable tool for making models and prototypes but also a manufacturing method for final parts as well as for mold inserts. It spreads throughout all disciplines and branches of industry, from art to medicine and from car manufacturing to aerospace engineering. AM is about to revolutionize manufacturing technology. This book is designed as a supporting material not only for special courses on advanced manufacturing technology but also for updating the content of traditional manufacturing lessons. It also provides basic information to facilitate self studies and is a valuable quick guide to AM.
