Groupwork literature and practice theory is largely eurocentric. The issues facing black groupworkers and the groupwork needs of service users from minority communities are inadequately addressed in available material. In some countries anti-racist and race equality perspectives are now under attack. Race and Groupwork provides a coherent overview of its subject. The Editors have included innovative material by front-line practitioners working with black and multiracial groups as well as articles on the theoretical and philosophical principals raised. Several articles reflect on some of the inhibiting and oppressive organisational factors which can hamper this important work, and suggest approaches which might enable more facilitative policies.

"This important study provides a unique and comprehensive analysis of research into the development of adoption policy and practice regarding black and minority ethnic children in the care of local authorities...I found this book intellectually stimulating and often provocative - it does not make comfortable reading but in the final analysis the case for retaining a commitment to placing children in families which reflect their ethnicity is strongly made." - Felicity Collier, the Director of British Agencies for Adoption and Fostering. * What are the needs of adopted minority ethnic children? * To what extent can white families meet these needs? * Should the emphasis on ethnic matching of children and families in adoption be relaxed? This book reviews the long running and often fierce controversy surrounding the adoption of black and minority ethnic children, either transracially into white families or into matched 'same race' placements. Through analysis of research and the writings of protagonists, the core concepts - namely the nature and salience of racial/ethnic identity, cultural heritage and dealing with racism - are explored and located within broader debates on 'race' and the family. The history of the controversy is set out in terms of the competing paradigms offered by liberalism and black radicalism, and more recent 'post-structuralist' influences. The author argues the need to see adoption (and especially that of black children) as inherently political and contested. While broadly supporting the case for 'same race' adoption, it is suggested that this must rest on acknowledgement of, and engagement with, social and psychological complexities, rather than their suppression beneath doctrinaire formulae. 'Race', Ethnicity and Adoption sets the issues in the wider context of a multiracial society and its politics, and will be of particular interest to social workers and child care professionals, but will also appeal more widely to students of sociology, and social and public policy.

Students and researchers in social psychology and medical sociology may also be interested in the sections on the theoretical and historical context of therapy. With an emphasis on white racial identity issues, the book is particularly relevant for white readers, however it may also enable readers from other racial groups to increase their understanding of racial development." --Book Jacket.

This text provides the most comprehensive information available about group dynamics and working with people in a variety of treatment and task-oriented groups. The student receives a thorough grounding in how to work with either treatment (ongoing) or task (special focus) groups, in settings that vary from treatment to organizational and community settings. Chapters on the history of groups, group dynamics, group leadership, and diversity help the reader build a solid knowledge base about groups. Later chapters follow a problem-solving model, taking the student through the phases of group work (planning, beginning, assessing, working, evaluating, and ending), and provide the student with useful practice skills for working with groups in each phase of his or her development. This edition includes the most up-to-date research on groups and new developments in the field of group work. The bibliography and references have also been updated. New case studies in Chapters 6-14 illustrate the six stages of the social group work process to help students apply the theory to actual social work practice.
