Excerpt from Nature-Notes and Impressions: In Prose and Verse Would I could talk as the flowers talk To my soul! and the stars, in their ceaseless walk Through Heaven! - and tell to the high and low The things that they say, so all might know The dreams they dream, and have told to me! As Nature sees would I could see! Then might I speak with authority! - I stand below and look above, And see her busy with life and love, And can tell the world so little thereof. Oh, for a soul that could feel much less! Or, feeling more, could so express The things it feels and their tenderness: The very essence, the soul of art, And all the heavens and hells of heart! Then might I rise to the very peak, The summit of song, which poets seek, And speak with a voice as the masters speak. In contrast to other works, the linguistic approach to rhythm presented in this book does not start from decontextualized structures but from performance data in a bottom-up fashion. Drawing on Halliday's distinction between wording, writing, and sounding, the proposed model takes account of several levels of abstraction. Important categories for data analysis are syllable rhythm and accent rhythm, which interact to establish prominence patterns (peaks and valleys) that can be observed in spontaneous and prepared speech, readings and recitals. Excluding subjective factors of analysis, the new model offers a tool to describe the rhythmic potential of prose and verse and to evaluate rhythmic performances of reading and reciting.

Excerpt from A Book for a Corner: Or Selections in Prose and Verse From Authors the Best Suited to That Mode of Enjoyment; With Comments on Each, and a General Introduction An ample account of the nature of this work will be found in the Introduction; but to give a brief and more general idea of the entertainment which it is proposed to set before the purchaser, it may be as well to state in this place, that the book, for the most part, is a collection of passages from such authors as retain, if not the highest, yet the most friendly and as it were domestic hold upon us during life, and sympathize with us through all portions of it. Hence the first extract is a Letter addressed to an Infant, the last the Elegy in the Churchyard, and the intermediate ones have something of an analogous reference to the successive stages of existence. Excerpt from Religious Pieces in Prose and Verse Here the alliteration is very marked. I confess, however, I do not see my way to bringing the whole of the Sermon into this form. If it were originally written in alliterative verse, it would evidently have been with the object of helping the people to commit it to memory. The first volume of the first paperback edition of The Poems of T. S. Eliot This two-volume critical edition of T. S. Eliot's poems establishes a new text of the Collected Poems 1909–1962, rectifying accidental omissions and errors that have crept in during the century since Eliot's astonishing debut, "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock." In addition to the masterpieces, The Poems of T. S. Eliot contains the poems of Eliot's youth, which were rediscovered only decades later; poems that circulated privately during his lifetime; and love poems from his final years, written for his wife, Valerie. Calling upon Eliot's critical writings as well as his drafts, letters, and other original materials, Christopher Ricks and Jim McCue have provided a commentary that illuminates the imaginative life of each poem. This first volume respects Eliot's decisions by opening with his Collected Poems 1909–1962 as he arranged and issued it shortly before his death. This is followed by poems uncollected but either written for or suitable for publication, and by a new reading text of the drafts of The Waste Land. The second volume opens with the two books of verse of other kinds that Eliot issued: Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats and Anabasis, his translation of St.-John Perse's Anabase. Each of these sections is accompanied by its own commentary. Finally, pertaining to the entire edition, there is a comprehensive textual history that contains not only variants from all known drafts and the many printings but also extended passages amounting to hundreds of lines of compelling verse.
