This case study explored the utilization of project-based learning (PBL) and how it affected student engagement and interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) careers. Sixty-seven students and nine teachers participated in this case study. Three research questions addressed student engagement, perceptions, and challenges during PBL implementation. -- This study was designed to understand the experiences teachers and students had when they participated in a PBL environment. This research investigated how to develop a globally skilled workforce utilizing a PBL approach and the challenges teachers encountered during implementation. The survey data and informal focus-group sessions with staff and students were utilized, analyzed, and summarized in order to obtain insight on perceptions, challenges, and implementation of PBL. -- PBL is an instructional approach that was designed to encourage more engaged learning. This approach was built upon realistic learning activities that stimulated student interest and motivation. This research discovered that PBL did teach content and 21st century skills as students worked collaboratively toward a common goal while responding to a question or problem. This study revealed that rigorous projects were carefully planned to aid students in learning important academic content. This study displayed how PBL allowed students to reflect on their projects and ideas with the opportunity to voice their decisions and findings. This instructional approach provided opportunities for students to investigate and strengthen interest in future STEM careers. -- The driving force of America's future economy and maintaining the competitive edge will be through more innovation, mainly derived from advances in STEM careers. As business and industry leaders stressed the importance of improving STEM education, there continued to be a need to better prepare students to fill STEM-related careers. This research adds to the current body of research knowledge on STEM education in a high school setting and provides guidance on integrating PBL into the academic program.

Abstract: The initiative of STEM Schools in Egypt with a boys’ school in 6th of October and a girls’ school in Maadi can be considered a turning point in the teaching and learning of science and mathematics in Egypt. Applying Project-based learning (PBL) in STEM schools is innovative to the educational system in Egypt. Project-based learning is the main pedagogical method representing 60% of students’ final scores in grade one and two and 20% of students’ final scores in grade three for STEM School students. The goal of this study was to investigate PBL in 6th of October STEM High school for Boys, the first STEM School in Egypt, and the model for the new seven STEM schools that started in Egypt in October, 2015. This investigation was to understand students’ perceptions of PBL. A focus group protocol was carried out by three trained teachers from the school with six groups of students, two from each grade. Data collected through the focus groups were analyzed according to three themes: (1) students’ perceptions of PBL (1) students’ learning, and (2) students’ collaboration. Findings of the study suggested that students were able to voice clear perceptions; and they believe that applying PBL has enhanced their learning of subjects integrated in their projects as well as increasing their collaborations with each other in the projects’ groups. However, they also suggested that more attention should be given to grade one students since doing projects is a new experience for them. Findings also suggested that students’ grade level as well as their previous exposure to PBL influenced their perceptions of PBL.

Transfer Of Learning In A K 8 Stem Academy Project Based Learning Pbl Environment written by Mary A. Fuller and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017 with Project method in teaching categories.
The multiple case study investigated levels and types of transfer observed in a K-8 STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) academy in a project-based learning (PBL) environment. The academy was constructed two years prior to the study and conducive to PBL instruction. The students and teachers were in the second year of using PBL in the subject of science at the time of the study. The grade levels observed were second, fourth, and sixth grade and each grade level had three PBL units examined from the beginning to the end of the unit. The nine case studies, from the three different grade levels, were observed to identify Haskell's levels and types of transfer as determined by project requirements, observation of students, completed projects, and student interviews. The findings from this study showed that while projects moved the students beyond knowledge acquisition to application of knowledge in completed projects such as books, films, dances, etc., higher levels of transfer and more types of transfer were not evident. Therefore, based on the results of this study, the evidence of lower levels of transfer suggests that the PBL units, though inventive and potentially valuable to student learning, were not designed for higher levels of transfer.

This text contains 25 Project-Based Learning (PBL) lessons written by a combination of undergraduate preservice teachers, inservice teachers, and graduate students. Everyone who wrote a chapter strives to improve STEM education to help others implement standards-based STEM instruction that takes learning in isolation to greater accountability through integrated and meaningful tasks that answer the question every teacher dreads: When am I going to use this? The PBLs were written to implement in middle and high-school classrooms. All of them are interdisciplinary in nature. We have divided them into six themes: construction and design, water, environment, mixtures, technology, nutrition and genetics. Each lesson contains a “schedule at a glance” and the “well-defined outcome” so you can quickly see how a particular PBL fits into your curriculum. Objectives are listed along with STEM connections written as objectives. We have included all materials needed and then each day of activities including an imbedded engagement, exploration, explanation, evaluation (including rubrics), and extension. We have tried to include everything necessary for successful implementation. This practical book is the perfect companion to the handbook for learning about implementing PBLs: Project-Based Learning: An Integrated Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Approach – second edition.

This second edition of Project-Based Learning (PBL) presents an original approach to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) centric PBL. We define PBL as an “ill-defined task with a well-defined outcome,” which is consistent with our engineering design philosophy and the accountability highlighted in a standards-based environment. This model emphasizes a backward design that is initiated by well-defined outcomes, tied to local, state, or national standard that provide teachers with a framework guiding students’ design, solving, or completion of ill-defined tasks. This book was designed for middle and secondary teachers who want to improve engagement and provide contextualized learning for their students. However, the nature and scope of the content covered in the 14 chapters are appropriate for preservice teachers as well as for advanced graduate method courses. New to this edition is revised and expanded coverage of STEM PBL, including implementing STEM PBL with English Language Learners and the use of technology in PBL. The book also includes many new teacher-friendly forms, such as advanced organizers, team contracts for STEM PBL, and rubrics for assessing PBL in a larger format.
