Excerpt from Problems in Ethics: Or Grounds for a Code of Rules for Moral Conduct The author of the following treatise has been occupied, at intervals, during his whole mature life in accumulating material for the composition of a work on Formal Ethics, which should also furnish a guide for the solution of the questions of Material Ethics, with the hope that the satisfactory establishment of the fundamental postulates of the science would at length compel recognition and acquiescence; and thus, the end of all moral activity being determined, whatever guides are possible to decide questions of duty might be furnished. But while a stock of material has been gathered, the composition of the work has been deferred, owing to the pressure of professional duties, the anxiety to keep an courant with all contemporary contributions to the philosophy and the science, in order to discover whether work had been already done which need not be repeated; and also because the author has moved aside several times for the composition of other treatises, which themselves would have a bearing upon the subject-matter of this one, which he intended should be the main effort of his life. Thus the early discovery that the moral ideal is also an æsthetic ideal led him to investigate the philosophy of Æsthetics.
