To celebrate Peter Huber's 60th birthday in 1994, our university had invited for a festive occasion in the afternoon of Thursday, June 9. The invitation to honour this outstanding personality was followed by about fifty colleagues and former students from, mainly, allover the world. Others, who could not attend, sent their congratulations by mail and e-mail (P. Bickel:" ... It's hard to imagine that Peter turned 60 ... "). After a welcome address by Adalbert Kerber (dean), the following lectures were delivered. Volker Strassen (Konstanz): Almost Sure Primes and Cryptography -an Introduction Frank Hampel (Zurich): On the Philosophical Foundations of Statistics 1 Andreas Buja (Murray Hill): Projections and Sections High-Dimensional Graphics for Data Analysis. The distinguished speakers lauded Peter Huber a hard and fair mathematician, a cooperative and stimulating colleague, and an inspiring and helpful teacher. The Festkolloquium was surrounded with a musical program by the Univer 2 sity's Brass Ensemble. The subsequent Workshop "Robust Statistics, Data Analysis and Computer Intensive Methods" in Schloss Thurnau, Friday until Sunday, June 9-12, was organized about the areas in statistics that Peter Huber himself has markedly shaped. In the time since the conference, most of the contributions could be edited for this volume-a late birthday present-that may give a new impetus to further research in these fields.

In the last decades, the production of goods and the offer of services have become quite complex activities mostly because of the markets globalisation, of the continuous push to the innovation and of the constant requests from more and more demanding markets. The main objective of a company system has become the achievement of the quality for the business management cycle. This cycle goes from the design (Plan) to the production (Do), from the control (Check) to the man agement (Action), as well as to the marketing and distribution. Nowadays, the Total Quality of the company system is evaluated, according to the ISO 9000 regulations, in terms of its capacity to adjust the design and the pro duction to the needs expressed (explicitly or implictly) by the final users of a product/service. In this process, the use of statistical techniques is essential not only in the classical approach of Quality Control of a product but also, and most importantly, in the Quality Design oriented to the satisfaction of customers. Thus, Total Quality refers to the global capacity of a company to fit its system to the real needs of its customers by designing products which are able to match the customers' taste and by implementing a statistical control of both the product and the Customer Satisfaction. In such a process of design and evaluation, several statistical variables are involved and with a different nature (numerical, categorical, ordinal).

Author-approved bcc: Robust statistics and the design of experiments are two of the fastest growing fields in contemporary statistics. Up to now, there has been very little overlap between these fields. In robust statistics, robust alternatives to the nonrobust least squares estimator have been developed, while in experimental design, designs for the efficient use of the least square estimator have been developed. This volume is the first to link these two areas by studying the influence of the design on the efficiency and robustness of robust estimators and tests. It shows that robust statistical procedures profit by an appropriate choice of the design and that efficient designs for a robust statistical analysis are more applicable. The classical approaches of experimental design and robust statistics are introduced before the areas are linked. Dr. Christine H. M ller teaches at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science of the Free University of Berlin and is a member of the research project on "Efficient Experiments in Industrial Production." From 1988-1991, she worked as a biometrician at the Medical Department of the Free University of Berlin.
