As organizations grow increasingly complex and unpredictable, the topic of proactivity at work has become of great importance for contemporary workplaces. Proactivity drives performance and innovation of teams and organizations and boosts individuals' well-being and careers. When individuals are proactive, they use their initiative at work to bring about a better future. They scan for opportunities, persist until change is achieved, and take charge to prevent problems' future reoccurrence. In this book, leading scholars on proactivity from across North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia explore how, why, and when individuals are motivated to initiate change within their organizations or themselves and examine the consequences of various forms of proactivity at work. Individual chapters explore specific concepts of proactivity, such as proactive voice, job crafting, and career proactivity, as well as highlight individual processes and organizational dynamics that underlie successful proactivity at work. By providing insights on key advances and future directions for proactivity theory, research, and practice, Proactivity at Worksynthesizes what we already know and identifies what we still need to learn about making things happenat work. This book is relevant to all those involved or interested in Work Psychology and Business, including Human Resource Management scholars.

Empowering, customizable, and backed by organizational research, this book introduces the PROACTIVE work design model and diagnostic tool to help organizations create optimal conditions for proactivity at work to flourish. The pressures and expectations of 21st-century life have led to short-term, reactive behavior in the workplace, however, long-term business success relies on proactive behavior, which is self-directed, future-focused, and change-orientated. But proactivity does not occur in a vacuum - it is a complex, social process heavily affected by contextual and situational factors. With its distinct and flexible design model, this book solves the problem of 'how' to create the optimal conditions for proactivity at work to flourish, and to drive sustainability and competitive advantage. And its diagnostic feature recognizes that readers are time-pressured and may already be doing some things well within their organizations, so it offers a solution to their problems without having to read the entire book before they can start making a difference. Uniquely, this book recognizes how important it is for leaders to shape the work environment and to be a positive role model to stimulate employee proactive behavior. Intended as a practical resource, this book provides a range of evidence-based tools and techniques and includes insightful case studies that will be useful for leaders, managers, HR professionals, OD practitioners, and consultants who want to drive proactive behaviors within their organizations.

Individuals’ behaviours at work are known to be shaped by cold, or cognitive-motivational, processes as well as hot, or affect-motivational, processes. To date, employee proactivity research has mainly focused on the ‘cold’ side. But emotion has been proposed to ‘energize’ employees’ proactivity, especially in interdependent and uncertain work environments. In this pioneering work, expert scholars offer new thinking on the process by examining how emotion can drive employees’ proactivity in the workplace and how, in turn, that proactivity can shape one’s emotional experiences.

In the constantly changing world of work, employees are expected to be proactive by taking initiative and being self-starting, future focused, and change oriented. Consequently, research around proactivity has grown exponentially over the last two decades. However, the relationship with employee well-being has been widely neglected. This research addressed this gap by investigating the dynamics between employee proactivity and subjective well-being, while taking work-related flow into account. With the use of a diary method, this study provided support that proactivity is not necessarily a burden on psychological well-being. Instead, proactivity in its dispositional and behavioral form of task crafting, was found to have a direct impact on optimal work experiences and well-being outcomes such as subjective vitality and positive affect. Acknowledging the complexity of the relationships, this study also tested mediated and moderated paths and provided several theoretical and practical contributions.

In this volume distinguished scholars explore and apply the theoretical models of continuity and discontinuity to their research in adult development. The chapters address the different ways in which continuity is affected by change over the life course, as well as how individuals negotiate and maintain crucial continuities by adaptive change. Topics include adult life crises, illness, sibling relationships, and gender identity. Each chapter is followed by an insightful commentary. This book is a tribute to Bernice L. Neugarten for her contributions to the field of adult development, which includes the concept of continuities. Contributors include W. Andrew Achenbaum, Robert H. Binstock, James Birren, Bertram J. Cohler, Margaret Hellie Huyck, Boaz Kahana, Eva Kahana, Sheldon S. Tobin, Lillian E. Troll, Steven H. Zarit, and others.
