Value chain development can make significant contributions to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) because it is a powerful approach to address root causes and binding constraints that impede the sustainable development of food value chains. The first step in value chain development is selecting those value chains that, when upgraded, can have the biggest SDG impact. This publication provides practical guidelines on how to select value chains for which upgrading is feasible and impactful in terms of the potential for generating positive economic, social and environmental outcomes. The handbook describes a step-by-step process that helps to assess, compare and select value chains in a participatory and evidence-based manner. It presents a toolbox that can be customized to projects with different budgets, scopes and objectives. This publication forms part of a set of FAO handbooks on Sustainable Food Value Chain (SFVC) development, which together provide hands-on guidance for development practitioners, including international organizations, NGOs, regional bodies and national governments seeking to achieve sustainability objectives through agrifood value chain development projects.

Plant breeding is experiencing a high level of novelty and innovation at a global scale, reshaping its technical possibilities, goals, and intended impact. A critical aspect of this change involves improving the usefulness of new varieties delivered by public sector breeding to specific customer groups, to achieve faster, more inclusive adoption and equitable benefit sharing in low-income, developing agriculture. The problem addressed by this Collection is that the goal of more inclusive adoption requires breeding to improve its relevance to rural women by implementing gender-intentional breeding. In the past, breeding programs often overlooked the specific preferences, roles, and responsibilities of women in agriculture, although women can be key contributors to farming and livestock management. As a result, new crop varieties or livestock breeds were not always aligned with women’s specific needs, such as ease of cultivation, processing, or storage. Poor alignment with users’ preferences and needs not only hinders the adoption of new varieties but limits their possibilities to benefit from these innovations.

Investing in farmers - or agriculture human capital - is crucial to addressing challenges in our global agri-food systems, from sustainably feeding the world's growing population with food that is safe, healthy and nutritious to finding innovative solutions for more resilient and climate-smart agriculture. Up-skilling human capital for value-chain competitiveness in Uruguay was developed by the FAO Investment Centre and the World Bank, with the objective to identify ways to upskill human capital and make Uruguayan agricultural value-chains more competitive. This publication looks at opportunities to increase key value chain efficiency and at the skills that are required to seize such opportunities. It identifies ways to develop human capital through training agricultural professionals - including researchers, agronomists and technicians - to lead the next generation of technology and innovation-driven agribusinesses. It suggests options for fostering a process of continuous development and upskilling in the agricultural sector in Uruguay. This publication is part of the Country Investment Highlights series under the FAO Investment Centre's Knowledge for Investment (K4I) programme.
