One of the most important issues facing New Testament scholarship today is the issue of Gnosticism. So wrote the author in 1973 in the first edition. With the publication since then of the entire Nag Hammadi library, this observation has become even more incisive. Was there a pre-Christian Gnosticism? Did Gnosticism directly or indirectly influence nascent Christianity? Many modern scholars argue that Gnosticism preceded the emergence of New Testament Christianity and constituted the raw material from which the apostles formed their message about Jesus. The author here analyzes the evidence used to support this thesis. He notes a series of methodological fallacies in the use of this evidence and concludes that clearly Gnostic materials are late and pre-Christian materials are not clearly Gnostic. A new chapter in this paperback edition brings the discussion up to date.

The Gnostics written by David Brakke and has been published by Harvard University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011 with Religion categories.

Brakke writes a pioneering study of the way the demon role relates to religious thinking and to cultural anxieties. The author's sources include biographies of exceptional monks, collections of monastic sayings and stories, letters from ascetic teachers to their disciples, sermons, community rules, and biblical commentaries. When monks imagined the resistance that they had to overcome in cultivating their selves or the temptation that offered an easier path, they saw supernatural beings that could take the shapes of animals, women, boys, and false angels in their attempts to seduce monks away from their devotion to God. And when they considered the inclinations in their own selves that opposed their best intentions, they concluded that demons introduced such problematic "thoughts" to their minds. Although the last twenty years has seen an explosion of scholarship on early Christian asceticism, producing brilliant explorations of the body, sexual renunciation, fasting, and gender, combat with demons has been left relatively unexplored.

Gnostic Truth And Christian Heresy written by A. H. B. Logan and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996 with Apocryphon of John categories.

The sensational discovery of the Nag Hammadi Coptic Library in Egypt in 1945-46 has revolutionized the study of the origins and development of the ancient religious phenomenon known as Gnosticism. It has brought to light many hitherto unknown Gnostic texts and is forcing a reappraisal of the traditional picture of Gnosticism as in essence a Christian heresy. This work focuses on several foundational Gnostic texts the 'Sethian texts'. Earlier discoveries of Mandaean and Manichaean texts had suggested that the origins of Gnosticism might lie in an oriental religion of redemption, culturally far removed from their pre-Christian context. But the Sethian texts suggest that these Pre-Christian Gnostics were fundamentally influenced by Jewish ideas.Alastair Logan identifies these Gnostics in their developing, essentially Christian context, isolates the earliest forms of their foundational myth in Irenaeus of Lyons (130?-200? CE) and the Apocryphon of John, and traces its development until it underwent a Sethian reinterpretation in the early third century CE. In exploring the fascinating interrelationship of Gnostic and Christian ideas, he relates a series of Nag Hammadi texts to the Gnostics; examines the literary and theological evolution of the two main versions of the Apocryphon in terms of Gnostic cosmology, anthropology, soteriology and eschatology; demonstrates how similar were the theological and soteriological concerns of Gnostics and 'orthodox'; and argues that the Gnostics were the first Christian Platonists, the first to develop a Trinity (of Father, Mother and Son), and the first to make post-baptismal chrismation central to Christian initiation.Dr. Logan overturnsmany common misunderstandings about Gnosticism. The Gnostics felt themselves to be Christians, true interpreters of the message of the unknown God of love first revealed in Christ, the heavenly Son.

No Longer Jews written by Carl B. Smith and has been published by Baker Academic this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-10-01 with Religion categories.

Where, when, and how did Gnosticism arise? What exactly is Gnosticism? There is no scholarly consensus on these questions. No Longer Jews reviews the theories about Gnosticism and its sources and details Smith's hypothesis, offering an excellent introductory text on Gnosticism. In addition to examining the development of Gnosticism, this book addresses issues of New Testament development and the history of Judaism, Christianity, and Gnosticism as they interact in the late first and early second centuries. Carl Smith starts with a lucid and incisive survey of the secondary materials on Gnosticism and explains various understandings of the development of Gnosticism. He defines Gnosticism by its unique anti-cosmic dualism between material things (evil) vs. spiritual things (good) and also explores both Gnosticism's probable close relationship with Judaism and its rejection of the Creator God of the Old Testament. After an extensive survey of the issues, Smith provides his own conclusions: first, that an early second-century dating for Gnosticism is most consistent with the historical details of the period; and second, that Egypt following the Jewish Revolt under Trajan (115-117 CE) provides a ripe context for Gnosticism's most unique and definitive innovation, the rejection of the cosmos and the Creator God of the Jews. He argues that individuals closely connected with Judaism--whether Jews, Jewish Christians, or gentile God-fearers--may have responded to the rebellion by rejecting the God and religion that inspired this apocalyptic and messianic ferment. "No longer Jews," they were now free to follow a higher God and way of life.

Seminar paper from the year 2022 in the subject Theology - Biblical Theology, grade: A, , language: English, abstract: According to John W. Drane, in his Journal, "Gnosticism and the New Testament 2", John writes asserting that over the last seventy years or so, three considerations have been taken up in dealing with the question of Gnosticism and the New Testament referred to as 'The classical theory', 'Pre-Christian Gnosticism' and 'A simultaneous development'. The classical theory terming 'Gnosticism as a Christian heresy'. The Church Fathers engaged in the fight to keep the Catholic Church of the early centuries free from heresy, assuming that the catholic faith was the original form of Christianity and any departure must have come in later, which could have been based on a perversion of orthodox Christian belief. From aforesaid, it was self-evident that Gnosticism was based on catholic Christianity, and constituted a deviation from the true faith. From the time of the Fathers until the rise of scientific biblical criticism towards the close of the nineteenth century, interpreters had more or less claimed that Gnosticism was a perversion of the true Christian gospel, beginning sometime in the second century AD, and that a fairly clear line of development could be tracked from those elements of Docetic teaching opposed in such New Testament writings as 1 John to the developed Gnostic heresies. The arrival of a scientific approach to biblical history dealt what must be considered as a death-blow to this theory of Gnostic origins, though it was not without a counter-attack that this was accomplished.
