Power, Politics & Society: An Introduction to Political Sociology discusses how sociologists have organized the study of politics into conceptual frameworks, and how each of these frameworks foster a sociological perspective on power and politics in society. This includes discussing how these frameworks can be applied to understanding current issues and other "real life" aspects of politics. The authors connect with students by engaging them in activities where they complete their own applications of theory, hypothesis testing, and forms of inquiry.

Symbolic Power Politics And Intellectuals written by David L. Swartz and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-04-12 with Social Science categories.

Power is the central organizing principle of all social life, from culture and education to stratification and taste. And there is no more prominent name in the analysis of power than that of noted sociologist Pierre Bourdieu. Throughout his career, Bourdieu challenged the commonly held view that symbolic power—the power to dominate—is solely symbolic. He emphasized that symbolic power helps create and maintain social hierarchies, which form the very bedrock of political life. By the time of his death in 2002, Bourdieu had become a leading public intellectual, and his argument about the more subtle and influential ways that cultural resources and symbolic categories prevail in power arrangements and practices had gained broad recognition. In Symbolic Power, Politics, and Intellectuals, David L. Swartz delves deeply into Bourdieu's work to show how central—but often overlooked—power and politics are to an understanding of sociology. Arguing that power and politics stand at the core of Bourdieu's sociology, Swartz illuminates Bourdieu's political project for the social sciences, as well as Bourdieu's own political activism, explaining how sociology is not just science but also a crucial form of political engagement.

Through a collection of carefully selected articles, Political Sociology: Readings on Power, Politics, State, and Society helps students analyze and understand events in the political and social world through the lens of power structures and the distribution of power in society. Chapter 1 examines the components of a strong civic culture. Chapter 2 discusses the processes of elite formation in major industrialized countries like the United States, Germany, France, Britain, and Japan. Chapter 3 examines whether presidents are held responsible for the mistakes of their agencies and what the media's role is in shaping that responsibility. In Chapter 4, readers learn about the relations between states and women from the sociological perspectives of democracy and development. Additional chapters address racial politics in the Missouri Bootheel region; how big technology can serve as a symbol of state power, wealth, and political authority; and the concept of false consciousness and its impact on the lives of individuals. The final chapter discusses the history of voter inequality and voter suppression. Thoroughly modern in approach, Political Sociology is an exemplary resource for courses in the social sciences.

Understanding Politics And Society written by Fabio de Nardis and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-03-26 with Political Science categories.

This textbook presents political sociology as a connective social science that studies political phenomena by creating fruitful connections with other perspectives. The relationship between politics and society is more complex than ever due to the emergence of new power structures, forms of conflict organization and management, and social practices of political participation. Several scholars describe this historical phase as the 'de-politicization of representative politics'. The book addresses classical themes of and approaches to political sociology, but also dedicates several chapters to contemporary developments within political sociology, including, for instance, the role of the internet and bottom-up political communication in social movements. In addition, the volume acts as a professional tool for those scholars and researchers that are beginning to study political processes from a sociological perspective.
