Nel pieno di un periodo di benessere economico che interessava il mondo, e l'Asia in particolare, Indonesia, Malesia e Filippine soffrivano per una delle catastrofi più terribili che hanno colpito l'umanità. A distanza di qualche anno, una crisi internazionale coinvolge il mondo intero, travolgendo, oltre il sistema bancario, anche le aree più produttive del pianeta e, naturalmente, anche l'arte asiatica emersa a fatica negli ultimi anni. Oggi da questo sub-continente si afferma una generazione di artisti dalle qualità non comuni, in grado di interessare e coinvolgere mercati, istituzioni e appassionati, come mai prima d'ora era avvenuto da questi territori".
