"In September 2011, the Secretary-General requested Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs and the Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) "to establish a core group of dedicated senior technical experts to coordinate system-wide preparations on ongoing efforts and propose a unified vision and road map for the definition of a United Nations development agenda post-2015, in consultation with all stakeholders." As a result of this request, the United Nations System Task Team on the Post-2015 United Nations Development Agenda (UNTT) was established and launched in January 2012. UNTT is co-chaired by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) and UNDP, and is composed of more than 60 entities of the United Nations system, including all the Regional Commissions. Its terms of reference include the formulation of a system-wide vision and road map to contribute to the global debate on the post-2015 United Nations development agenda. In June 2012, UNTT issued a report to the Secretary-General entitled "Realizing the Future We Want for All". The report identifies a future vision based on the core values of human rights, equality and sustainability, and proposes to reorganize a post-MDG framework along four dimensions: (i) inclusive social development; (ii) inclusive economic development, (iii) environmental sustainability, and (iv) peace and security. The report concludes by stressing the need to develop a post-2015 agenda that responds to people's aspirations through "clear, easy-to communicate goals that will help guide coherent policy action at the global, regional and national levels." The present report is designed to make a regional contribution to that global policy debate, including by identifying practical difficulties in achieving such policy coherence at different levels."--Publisher's description.

In 2000, at the United Nations Millennium Summit, world leaders agreed to the Millennium Declaration. The Declaration included development targets to be reached by 2015, which were to become known as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Progress has been made towards the achievement of the MDGs, but poverty remains widespread. With the terminal year approaching, the international community has begun the process of determining the goals which might follow the MDGs. While the UN is driving the process, there has been very little introspection on its own organizational capacity to help countries to meet the goals and is being increasingly sidelined by other more effective development organizations and initiatives. Based on extensive original research that has critically examined the role and functions of the organizations of the UN development system, this book seeks to capture in a single volume a comprehensive review of the UN’s performance and prospects for development. The contributors each offer extensive experience and familiarity—as practitioners and researchers—with the UN and development; and the book will contribute to the urgently needed debate on the reform of the UN development system at a critical juncture. The Asia-Pacific region's impressive economic growth and remarkable achievements in poverty reduction have not succeeded in closing gaps in income between the rich and poor, nor the unequal access to, for example, health care and education among other basic services. These gaps disproportionately affect women and the most vulnerable segments of society. They also hamper inclusive growth, undermine social cohesion and contribute to unsustainable production and consumption patterns. In short, these social development gaps undermine efforts to achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.Sustainable Social Development in Asia and the Pacific summarizes the social development gaps as countries in the region take steps to achieve the SDGs, and sketches out a broad regional agenda for a people-centred transformation, outlining some of the key priorities and resources needed. The policy simulations reported here clearly indicate that acceleration of economic growth alone would not address the remaining development gaps. Changing the development paradigm to ensure more decent jobs, complemented by broadened coverage of social protection and universal education and health care is critical for eliminating extreme poverty from the region and achieving the other SDGs. Asia and the Pacific is already the most dynamic region in the world. By harnessing the potential of its people, the region can also be at the forefront of a global social transformation for a prosperous, inclusive and sustainable future for all.
