An exploration of polyphony and the perspective it offers on our own polyphonic brains. Polyphony—the interweaving of simultaneous sounds—is a crucial aspect of music that has deep implications for how we understand the mind. In Polyphonic Minds, Peter Pesic examines the history and significance of “polyphonicity”—of “many-voicedness”—in human experience. Pesic presents the emergence of Western polyphony, its flowering, its horizons, and the perspective it offers on our own polyphonic brains. When we listen to polyphonic music, how is it that we can hear several different things at once? How does a single mind experience those things as a unity (a motet, a fugue) rather than an incoherent jumble? Pesic argues that polyphony raises fundamental issues for philosophy, theology, literature, psychology, and neuroscience—all searching for the apparent unity of consciousness in the midst of multiple simultaneous experiences. After tracing the development of polyphony in Western music from ninth-century church music through the experimental compositions of Glenn Gould and John Cage, Pesic considers the analogous activity within the brain, the polyphonic “music of the hemispheres” that shapes brain states from sleep to awakening. He discusses how neuroscientists draw on concepts from polyphony to describe the “neural orchestra” of the brain. Pesic's story begins with ancient conceptions of God's mind and ends with the polyphonic personhood of the human brain and body. An enhanced e-book edition allows the sound examples to be played by a touch.

Experiencing Multiple Realities written by Marius Ion Benţa and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-02-15 with Social Science categories.

This book offers a theoretical investigation into the general problem of reality as a multiplicity of ‘finite provinces of meaning’, as developed in the work of Alfred Schutz. A critical introduction to Schutz’s sociology of multiple realities as well as a sympathetic re-reading and reconstruction of his project, Experiencing Multiple Realities traces the genesis and implications of this concept in Schutz’s writings before presenting an analysis of various ways in which it can shed light on major sociological problems, such as social action, social time, social space, identity, or narrativity.

Discursive approaches to the study of religion have received a lot of attention recently. Making Religion brings together leading theorists in the field who explore the theoretical and practical dimensions of the analysis of religious discourse. The volume provides an overview of current debates in the field, extends and improves upon contemporary theories and methodologies, and contributes to the discipline more broadly by flagging the importance of this emerging field of research. The combination of theoretical reflection and practical application of discourse analysis as a tool to study religion opens up new perspectives for future research. Contemporary research in personality, social psychology and sociology has renewed an interest in the self. This volume argues that the self may consist fo multiple selves, any of which may interact with each other in a dialogical fashion. The self is presented as a non-unitary embodiment that transcends the limits of individualism and rationalism. Beginning with philosophical discussion of the self, this volume discusses the decentralization of the self in narrative psychology, the retreat of the omniscient narrator in literary sciences, the genesis of self-knowledge in children and the concept of modern society as a multiplicity of collective voices.

Transforming Corrections written by David Polizzi and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with Social Science categories.

This book is part of the Criminal Justice and Psychology Series. Transforming Corrections offers an alternative perspective not easily found in the existing literature concerning the way in which individuals in the criminal justice system are understood and treated by those responsible for their care. Intended as a supplementary text, this collection will help to enhance the current conversation that is ongoing in the field of rehabilitative corrections. The wide-reaching focus of this collection is intended to provide a variety of alternative perspectives related to issues of theory, correctional practice and offender treatment. As such, Transforming Corrections could be adopted in introductory courses in criminology and criminal justice as well as graduate courses more specifically focused on issues related to offender treatment and correctional administration. "A book subtitled Humanistic Approaches to Corrections and Offender Treatment manifestly does not mirror prevailing practices in corrections, nor reflect the dominant ethos of the times. Such a book instead gives some of us heady sustenance and support in the goals that we secretly aspire to -- it gives us a sense of what might be achieved in the distant future, and what might already have been accomplished. The book is an invitation for us to 'hang in there' and persevere. 'If you are not quite burned out, have not given up, and are still fighting the odds,' the message of these chapters is, 'you are not nearly as alone as you sometimes feel out there on your limb.' The reassuring fact is that there are enclaves of humanistic activity in correctional settings, and as these experiments demonstrate their effectiveness, they are bound to ensure the long-term survival of the approach." -- Hans Toch, University at Albany-SUNY, from the Preface "It is regrettable that a collection such as this is necessary in order to encourage those who wish to treat prisoners as human beings. For this reason alone, the book deserves a place in every library. Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates and above." -- CHOICE Magazine
