Pedagogies of Kindness and Respect presents a wide variety of concepts from scholars and practitioners who discuss pedagogies of kindness, an alternative to the «no excuses» ideology now dominating the way that children are raised and educated in the U.S. today. The fields of education, and especially early childhood education, include some histories and perspectives that treat those who are younger with kindness and respect. This book demonstrates an informed awareness of this history and the ways that old and new ideas can counter current conditions that are harmful to both those who are younger and those who are older, while avoiding the reconstitution of the romantic, innocent child who needs to be saved by more advanced adults. Two interpretations of the upbringing of children are investigated and challenged, one suggesting that the poor do not know how to raise their children and thus need help, while the other looks at those who are privileged and therefore know how to nurture their young. These opposing views have been discussed and problematized for more than thirty years. Pedagogies of Kindness and Respect investigates the issue of why this circumstance has continued and even worsened today.

The framework is based on a consideration of the context in which play occurs, as well as the nature of play itself. Readers are encouraged to consider their own views and expectations of play and to develop a strong awareness of their perspectives about the value of play. Play experiences for children are highlighted in several ways throughout the book. Each chapter features several examples of play drawn from interviews with and observations of young children. These are used to highlight key issues and to emphasise the considerable ingenuity and enthusiasm exhibited by young children in their play.

This guide presents, discusses and describes a selection of games and puzzles for school second language instruction. The first chapter discusses the value of these activities in language teaching, including the psychology of problem-solving, the process of motivating and involving students, three key questions to ask about games in the classroom (What constitutes their enjoyment? What role does the teacher play? What evidence exists to show they are effective?), and literature on using them. Subsequent chapters outline the characteristics of puzzles and games in terms of three general language instruction objectives: knowledge of specifics, knowledge of entire messages, and development of communication skills. This edited collection looks at education through the lens of psychoanalysis and vice versa. Each contribution asks, in effect, what does it mean to be a pedagogue and an educational theorist after Freud? The authors include clinical practitioners (Rivka Eifermann, M. Robert Gardner, Stephen Appel) as well as academics from philosophy (Trevor Pateman, John Wilson, Yael Shalem, David Bensusan), sociology (Deborah Britzman), curriculum studies (William Pinar, Madeleine Grumet), and social and literary theory (Valerie Walkerdine, Jane Gallop, James Donald). The authors do not share any particular theoretical perspective, only a determination to demonstrate some exciting outcomes of understanding that pedagogy is to a crucial extent unconscious, and that psychotherapy is, in Freud's words, an after-education.
