Parental anxiety is at an all-time high, and with parenting styles swinging from attachment parenting to that of "Tiger Moms," Robin Berman, MD, inspires mothers and fathers to find a graceful place in the middle. Children used to be seen and not heard, but now they are at the center of their parents' universe. Parents today seem skittish about asserting their authority. They indulge in their children's demands and tantrums, and enter into endless negotiations, all for fear of hurting their children's feelings. Sadly, this indulgence is creating a generation of psychologically fragile individuals, and it undermines the very self-esteem it seeks to build. In between these parenting extremes lies a better way to raise thriving, well-adjusted children. Parents need to know that it is not only OK but essential to be in charge. Children with too much power often become anxious, and not allowing children to work through negative emotions leads to a lack of resilience later in their lives. Permission to Parent teaches parents to be comfortable setting boundaries while maintaining a loving connection, fostering self-esteem, respect, and emotional maturity. Children need limits more than they need indulgences, time more than schedules, and love more than stuff. Robin Berman, MD, provides the tools for great parenting by drawing from her extensive clinical experience and wisdom collected from seasoned therapists, revered teachers, and role-model parents. Permission to Parent strikes the perfect balance of advice, anecdote, and research to be an essential parenting guide.

So many children, teens and their families are experiencing painful failures in their relationships as a result of following several generations of bad parenting advice. For far too long parents have tried to innovate and create a new, softer kinder way of parenting their children, only to find that they have created self absorbed, entitled, disrespectful children, who fail to launch into adulthood because they don’t have the grit and resilience to make it in the world today. Mia advocates a return to traditional teachings about parenting that we learned from our grandparents and parents, many of which are rooted in Biblical teachings. This is a culmination of her observations about what makes kids successful, and resilient, even in the face of overwhelming obstacles.

Strategic Interpersonal Communication written by John A. Daly and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-01-11 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.
This book discusses how people go about achieving their social goals through human symbolic interaction. The editors' collective presumption is that there are more or less typical ways that people attempt to obtain desired outcomes -- be they persuasive, informative, conflictive, or the like -- through communication. Representing a first summary of research done by scholars, primarily in the communication discipline, this volume seeks to identify and understand how it is that people achieve what they want through social interaction. Under the very broad label of strategies, this research has sought to: * identify critical social goals such as gaining compliance, generating affinity, resolving social conflict, and offering information; * specify, for each goal, the ways, or strategies, by which people can go about achieving these goals; * determine predictors of strategy selection -- that is, why does a person opt for one strategy over others to obtain the desired end? The research also reflects the attention the field of communication has given to strategy issues in the past 15 years. The chapters describe research on the ways in which people achieve different goals, and summarize existing research and theory on the attainment of social goals. Readers will gain insight into many of the issues that exist regardless of the strategy being discussed. Thus, this volume may not include chapters on topics such as ways people elicit or offer disclosure, ways people demonstrate anger, or ways people create guilt, but the issues that appear consistently throughout the various chapters should apply equally to these. Finally, the essays in this volume provide not only a summary of what has been accomplished to date, but also an initial theoretic map for future research concerning strategic interpersonal communication.

A Parenting written by Eva Moskowitz and has been published by HarperCollins this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-10-24 with Education categories.
Eva Moskowitz, founder of the highly lauded Success Academy Charter Schools, shares her advice for raising smart, successful, and intellectually engaged children. Eva Moskowitz has built a national reputation as the founder and leader of Success Academy Charter Schools, one of the country’s most highly regarded networks of schools, but while most people know Eva for her success in educating 20,000 mainly low-income students who are routinely accepted to our nation’s best universities, she has also been responsible for raising three children of her own. In A+ Parenting, Eva shares what she has learned both as a parent and an educator about raising children to be enthusiastic and successful learners. Eva’s most important message is that parents can and should play a critical role in their children’s intellectual development. Each year, children only spend about 180 days in school; how they spend the remaining 185 days is up to their parents. Children who continue to learn when they are out of school will make far more progress than those who don’t, but parents need not attempt to recreate school at home. Instead, they can encourage their children to engage in fun activities that will have a huge impact on their creativity, intellectual curiosity, and attention span. A+ Parenting is every parent’s must-have guide to enriching every aspect of a child’s life, from the morning carpool to the soccer field to the dinner table—without having to hire tutors or carve out more hours in the day. Moskowitz explains how to take the time you’re already spending with your children and make it more fulfilling and intellectually stimulating for them. The book is full of practical guidance such as: Which extracurricular activities are best for a child’s development. How children can learn by watching movies and playing games—and why you should reach for chess or Monopoly over checkers or Candyland. How to help your child overcome a learning disability and ensure it doesn’t undermine their self-confidence. Why getting angry at children doesn’t work but expressing disappointment does. In addition to advice, this book is filled with carefully curated lists of educational activities, including games to play, movies to watch, puzzles to solve, books to read, music to listen to, and experiments to perform. These activities, supported with love and joy, are all parents need to turn their children into lifelong learners.

Statistical models attempt to describe and quantify relationships between variables. In the models presented in this chapter, there is a response variable (sometimes called dependent variable) and at least one predictor variable (sometimes called independent or explanatory variable). When investigating a possible cause-and-effect type of relationship, the response variable is the putative effect and the predictors are the hypothesized causes. Typically, there is a main predictor variable of interest; other predictors in the model are called covariates. Unknown covariates or other independent variables not controlled in an experiment or analysis can affect the dependent or outcome variable and mislead the conclusions made from the inquiry (Bock, Velleman, & De Veaux, 2009). A p value (p) measures the statistical significance of the observed relationship; given the model, p is the probability that a relationship is seen by mere chance. The smaller the p value, the more confident we can be that the pattern seen in the data 2 is not random. In the type of models examined here, the R measures the prop- tion of the variation in the response variable that is explained by the predictors 2 specified in the model; if R is close to 1, then almost all the variation in the response variable has been explained. This measure is also known as the multiple correlation coefficient. Statistical studies can be grouped into two types: experimental and observational.

The Experience Of Parenting written by Malinda Jo Muzi and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000 with Family & Relationships categories.
This authoritative based book explores the "science of parenting" -- a body of knowledge built upon study, rather than opinion, and the work of experts who have conducted research in this discipline. It emphasizes that the parenting experience differs across cultures and social class, and acknowledges the impact time, place, natural circumstances, and expectations have on how children are cared for and raised. Coverage includes information on the decision to parent, learning to parent, and a historical perspective on the subject (with parenting experts throughout the ages). The various aspects of parenting, the interrelated forces that influence it, and developing the skills to deal with them, remain a focus throughout the entire book. For anyone thinking about becoming a parent, or already a parent, who wants a valuable resource of information to help deal with the complexities involved in raising a child.
