Performability modelling and evaluation brings together two disciplines that have long been treated separately in different communities: computer and communication system performance evaluation and system reliability and availability evaluation. * Provides a single-source reference covering of all aspects of performability evaluation. * Introduces a new approach to assessing the performance and dependability of systems thus revealing system characteristics that cannot be uncovered separately by performance or reliability evaluation. * Explains how systems can operate partially in the presence of failures by discussing: --Capacity of failure prone clusters of transaction processing systems. --Network throughput when network nodes and links fail. --Task completion times on degradable multiprocessor systems. --A variety of modelling and evaluation techniques. * Features software tool descriptions to support performability evaluations as well as an extensive bibliography. Computer scientists and engineers will find this excellent overview compulsive reading as will postgraduates and researchers in computer science and related fields.

This book presents the latest key research into the performance and reliability aspects of dependable fault-tolerant systems and features commentary on the fields studied by Prof. Kishor S. Trivedi during his distinguished career. Analyzing system evaluation as a fundamental tenet in the design of modern systems, this book uses performance and dependability as common measures and covers novel ideas, methods, algorithms, techniques, and tools for the in-depth study of the performance and reliability aspects of dependable fault-tolerant systems. It identifies the current challenges that designers and practitioners must face in order to ensure the reliability, availability, and performance of systems, with special focus on their dynamic behaviors and dependencies, and provides system researchers, performance analysts, and practitioners with the tools to address these challenges in their work. With contributions from Prof. Trivedi's former PhD students and collaborators, many of whom are internationally recognized experts, to honor him on the occasion of his 70th birthday, this book serves as a valuable resource for all engineering disciplines, including electrical, computer, civil, mechanical, and industrial engineering as well as production and manufacturing.

Performance Modelling And Evaluation Of Atm Networks written by Demetres D. Kouvatsos and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-04-17 with Computers categories.
Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks are widely considered to be the new generation of high speed communication systems both for broadband public information highways and for local and wide area private networks. ATM is designed to integrate existing and future voice, audio, image and data services. Moreover, ATM aims to simplify the complexity of switching and buffer management, to optimise intermediate node processing and buffering and to limit transmission delays. However, to support such diverse services on one integrated communication network, it is most essential, through careful engineering, to achieve a fruitful balance amongst the conflicting requirements of different quality of service constraints ensuring that one service does not have adverse implications on another. Over recent years there has been a great deal of progress in research and development of ATM technology, but there are still many interesting and important problems to be resolved such as traffic characterisation and control, routing and optimisation, ATM switching techniques and the provision of quality of service. This book presents thirty-two research papers, both from industry and academia, reflecting latest original achievements in the theory and practice of performance modelling of ATM networks worldwide. These papers were selected, subject to peer review, from those submitted as extended and revised versions out of fifty-nine shorter papers presented at the Second IFIP Workshop on "Performance Modelling and Evaluation of ATM Networks" July 4-7, 1994, Bradford University. At least three referees from the scientific committee and externally were involved in the selection of each paper.

Hardbound. Today's computer systems handle more functions for more users and have become very complex. As users become increasingly reliant, the demand for good performance grows, creating a need for better modelling techniques and tools in the performance area. In the last few years, significant advances and contributions have been made; this workshop was a meeting point where researchers and practitioners could voice their concerns, and where recent R&D issues in both theoretical and practical aspects of systems performance evaluation could be presented. The workshop mainly covered modelling and measurement techniques and packages, as well as the use of AI tools in this area. 100 people from different fields in 12 different countries exchanged news on advances, contributions and future trends. Several modelling techniques were presented in a general way or in order to provide the analysis of specific problems or applications in the field of compute
