Learning through the medium of a second or additional language is becoming very common in different parts of the world because of the increasing use of English as the language of instruction and the mobility of populations. This situation demands a specific approach that considers multilingualism as its core. Pedagogical translanguaging is a theoretical and instructional approach that aims at improving language and content competences in school contexts by using resources from the learner's whole linguistic repertoire. Pedagogical translanguaging is learner-centred and endorses the support and development of all the languages used by learners. It fosters the development of metalinguistic awareness by softening of boundaries between languages when learning languages and content. This Element looks at the way pedagogical translanguaging can be applied in language and content classes and how it can be valuable for the protection and promotion of minority languages. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

With increasing mobility of people across the world, there is a pressing need to develop evidence-based teaching practices that lead to high-quality education, which serves the needs of inclusive societies and social and epistemic justice. This book presents cutting-edge qualitative case-study research across a range of educational contexts, research-method contributions and theory-oriented chapters by distinguished multilingual education scholars. These take stock of the field of translanguaging in relation to the education of multilingual individuals in today’s globalized world. The volume breaks new ground in that all chapters share a focus on teachers as ‘knowledge generators’ and many on teacher-researcher collaboration. Together, the chapters provide comprehensive and up-to-date applications of the concept of pedagogical translanguaging and present recent research in educational contexts that have hitherto received scant attention, namely secondary-level education, education for adult immigrants and the school-wide introduction of pedagogical translanguaging in primary school. Chapters 1, 3, 4 and 8 are free to download as open access publications under a CC BY NC ND licence. Examination Thesis in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Miscellaneous, , language: English, abstract: This paper aims to gather evidence and improve existing knowledge about the factors that influence EFL students' attitudes towards plurilingualism as well as to investigate the extent to which EFL students' attitudes towards EFL learning foster or hinder plurilingualism. An ideal way to investigate these questions would be through interviews, surveys or classroom observations. However, I believe that social science research should not be limited to primary data, especially during a pandemic when schools and children are overwhelmed by social distancing and the overuse of virtual learning. Therefore, in this paper, I examine existing empirical studies on language learning to answer the research questions. EFL stands for English as a foreign language. This term is most commonly used for students whose first language is not English and who learn English while living in their home country. The term 'monolingual' in this paper refers to those who speak the language of their nation as their mother tongue. A bilingual person is someone who can speak two languages at a high level, and a multilingual person is someone who can communicate in more than two languages at a high level. ‘L1’ refers to one's mother tongue, and ‘L2’ is the language learned after the first language, generally after the mother tongue. First, a brief overview of the transition of language education from monolingualism to plurilingualism is given. Then plurilingualism and attitudes are defined and discussed. After that, the traces of plurilingualism and attitude in foreign language teaching-learning practices in schools are then discussed. To this end, some empirical studies dealing with pupils' attitudes towards plurilingualism will be presented and critically examined. This is followed by a conclusion that includes the limitations of the work and suggestions for future research.

This book presents new research on Chinese as a Second Language (CSL) teaching from an ethnographic classroom study on classroom translanguaging practices that highlights the policy and pedagogical implications of adopting a creative and principled multilingual approach. Drawing on a case study from Hong Kong, it analyses naturally observed language patterns in CSL classrooms and the attitudes of students and teachers towards prescribed classroom language policies, and thereby demonstrates the importance of mixing Chinese, English and students’ home languages to achieve successful second language learning. It discusses the nature and guiding principles for classroom translanguaging research and provides research tools that will enable second language teachers to examine their own language practices. The author argues persuasively that second language teaching practices and policies must reflect the current reality of language use and the diverse learning needs of multilingual students. This book will appeal to teacher educators and researchers in fields such as second language acquisition, foreign language teaching and language policy.

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2023 in the subject Pedagogy - Intercultural Pedagogy, grade: pass without corrections, University of Edinburgh (Moray House School of Education and Sport), course: PhD Education, language: English, abstract: This study investigates the role of visualisation in language education to explore a visual strategy for learning that is driven by the goal of deeper learning for all learners, built on theoretical principles of pluriliteracies development learner agency and multimodality. The integration of these concepts has significantly impacted the rationale of the research foci and therefore lies at the heart of this pioneering study that connects pluriliteracies with English language teaching and learning in a primary school in China. In order to investigate the potential role of visuals in English language learning classrooms, this study was conducted by designing and teaching visual-related thematic content to three small groups of English younger learners in China and interviewing them using their own preferred online platform. Participants were encouraged to create visuals, for example, drawings to demonstrate their thinking of abstract conceptual knowledge and scaffold their communication with peers and the teacher-researcher. Such integration of visual creation with language learning is facilitated by learner-teacher Learning Conversations constructing a shared learning space owned and led by learners, which may offer a clear steer in the direction of promoting learner agency and achieving the quality of learning, thereby complementing traditional ways of teaching in China and beyond. Emphasised by research and studies regarding pedagogies for ‘quality’ and ‘successful’ learning (Coyle & Meyer, 2017), the long-established means of measuring learning using tests and examinations may not be sufficient for building learners’ sense of achievement and agentic mindset to direct their own learning. Given the importance attached to PISA league tables on a global basis, the quality of education is at the core of socio-political concerns, offering alternative pedagogic thinking to education systems that define passing examinations as the main criterion of academic success. Note from the editor: The PowerPoint presentation in the appendix had to be edited due to copyright concerns.

Vigorously advocates for realising translanguaging’s transformative potential in education. This book examines diverse aspects of advocacy for translanguaging as a legitimate educational practice. It advances a practical theory of the translanguaging of education that is informed by deliberative advocacy and based in evidence. Combinations of quantitative and qualitative research from preschool to higher and adult education in different parts of the world give insight into current translanguaging strategies and pedagogies. From translanguaging and transsemiotising in subject lessons such as Mathematics and Geography, to transdisciplinary engagement with poetry and music beyond the classroom, the findings contribute to the development of a practical theory of translanguaging in education, and demonstrate how translanguaging plays a part in everyday language learning and language use. The growing superdiversity around the world now appears to be the norm. In traditional English-speaking inner circle nations, it is becoming increasingly rare to find classrooms with students who come from monocultural and monolingual backgrounds. However, teaching practices remain based on Anglocentric standards and perspectives even when most of the English speakers in the world are no longer just the monolingual speakers of the language. Research in bilingualism and multilingualism reverberate the potential of translanguaging as a pedagogical practice. This is to leverage all the linguistic, cultural, and semiotic resources of learners so that they can actively engage in the language, literacy, and content area learning processes in the classroom. However, even though it has gained ground in theory and research, it has not been upheld in instructional practice, especially in the Anglophone nations. While some regions view translanguaging as a pathway to educational justice, others face barriers such as limited resources, administrative constraints, or lack of teacher training. Despite its promise, concerns remain around the selective use of languages and the risk of reinforcing existing linguistic hierarchies. Global Perspective on Issues and Trends in Educational Translanguaging explores translanguaging pedagogies from both monolingual English-speaking contexts and multilingual and multicultural contexts. It examines a monolingual-multilingual pairing of theoretical, research, and practical perspectives from around the world, assessing how translanguaging pedagogies are practiced and researched worldwide. This book covers topics such as indigenous studies, migrant learners, and pedagogy, and is a useful resource for educators, language experts, academicians, researchers, and scientists.

This book offers a critical exploration of definitions, methodologies and ideologies of English-medium instruction (EMI), contributing to new understandings of translanguaging as theory and pedagogy across diverse contexts. It brings together a number of conceptual and empirical studies on translanguaging in EMI at different educational levels, in a variety of countries, with different approaches to translanguaging, different named languages, and different policies. These studies include several underrepresented contexts across the globe, providing a broad view of how translanguaging in EMI is understood in these educational settings. Furthermore, this book addresses the complexities of translanguaging through a discussion of the affordances and constraints associated with the use of multiple linguistic resources in the EMI classroom.
