One in six American children live in poverty. One in six struggle with a developmental disability. An estimated 70 percent of American adults have experienced a traumatic event.Despite the overwhelming prevalence of these circumstances, societal expectations and the country's fragmented, under-resourced service systems make it nearly impossible for families experiencing hardship to keep up. In many cases, the system makes their situation worse. In her book, Zilberstein, Clinical Director of the Northampton, Massachusetts chapter of A Home Within, provides a candid look at how parents contending with poverty, illness, disability, or other constraints are expected to do so much with so little-and the price they and society pay.Through the unforgettable portraits of six overburdened families, Parents Under Pressure shows how health crises can quickly devolve into the loss of jobs and homes, how public perceptions of poor people hamper the chances for a better life, and the ways in which race and income affect access to assistance. Judged by family, friends and professionals who question their abilities and choices, parents feel inadequate and drained, rather than supported.

Parents Under Pressure (PuP) is a home-visiting service that provides parenting support to adults who are in treatment for drug or alcohol misuse, with the aim of improving the quality of the parent-child relationship and reducing the risk of child maltreatment. It was first developed in Australia for families with children aged 2-8 years. The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children has implemented the programme in England and Scotland with a particular focus on children aged under 2, who are held to be at increased risk of harm: it is now run in 11 sites. To complement a randomised controlled trial that has been commissioned, the Society has also carried out a service evaluation to learn more about the characteristics and needs of service users. The evaluation investigated the demographic profile and needs of the parents and children, differences between those who complete the programme and those who drop out, reasons for non-completion, evidence of change in parent and child outcomes, the factors associated with change, whether the risk status of children changes during the programme and the predictors of this change, and what is known about fathers enrolled in the programme. This technical report supplements the main report by providing additional detail and information on the evaluation methods, analysis and findings.
