This WWII history sheds light on the operations and combat experiences of Hitler's "armored infantry". As the foot soldiers who went into battle alongside the Third Reich's fearsome tanks, the panzergrenadiers occupied a unique position in the German war machine. Whether in the Wehrmacht or Waffen-SS, these troops endured all the horrors of infantry combat—fighting hand-to-hand, storming enemy positions, and rescuing fallen comrades—but they did so in the shadow of thundering armored fighting vehicles like the Tiger and Panther. In Panzergrenadier Aces, Franz Kurowski vividly recounts many of these soldier's most dramatic stories, offering a rare window into their role in the larger conflict while bringing them and their actions to life.

A richly illustrated memoir by highly decorated Wehrmacht soldier—"recommended to anyone with an interest in the Panzerwaffe in the Second World War" (Recollections of WWII ). After serving as a gunlayer on a Pz.Mk.III during Barbarossa, Richard Freiherr von Rosen led a Company of Tigers at Kursk. Later he led a company of King Tiger panzers at Normandy and in late 1944 commanded a battle group (12 King Tigers and a flak Company) against the Russians in Hungary in the rank of junior, later senior lieutenant (from November 1944, his final rank.) Only 489 of these King Tiger tanks were ever built. They were the most powerful heavy tanks to see service, and only one kind of shell could penetrate their armor at a reasonable distance. Every effort had to be made to retrieve any of them bogged down or otherwise immobilized, which led to many towing adventures. The author has a fine memory and eye for detail. Easy to read and not technical, his account adds substantially to the knowledge of how the German Panzer Arm operated in the Second World War. "The author has a fine memory and eye for detail . . . It adds substantially to the knowledge of how the German Panzer Arm operated during the Second World War."—Military Vehicles Magazine "The images accompany the story well. Richard Von Rosen, wounded several times and fighting a good part of the war on the eastern front, was certainly a lucky soldier, and we are also lucky to read these pages . . . highly recommend to all fans of memories of the Second World War."— Old Barbed Wire Blog

The story of two men destined to face each other on the battlefields of Normandy is told in this programme. Michael Wittmann was a knight of the Nazi empire, a natural and accomplished soldier and highly decorated. Like Wittmann, Trooper Joe Ekins, a shoemaker from Northamptonshire, was a volunteer for military service but there the similarities ended. Joe was a reluctant soldier in a county yeomanry armoured regiment, while Wittmann served in the Waffen SS's elite Tiger Battalion.Panzer ace Wittmann had 138 tank kills to his name, including an impressive score against 7th Armoured Division at Villers Bocage early in the Normandy Campaign but by August 1944 the Allied breakout was gaining momentum and I SS Panzer Corps were struggling to contain the British and Canadians as they fought towards Falaise. In the fields south of Caen Wittmann's Tiger and Joe Ekins's Sherman Firefly were pitted against each other but howwas the Panzer Ace finally knocked out?Veteran of the Battle of Normandy and the North West European Campaign, Joe Ekins fought with the Northamptonshire Yeomanry and during Operation Totalise, the British and Canadian breakout from the Normandy Beachhead, he was a gunner in a Sherman Firefly. This was the only Allied tank that could knock out the much feared, mighty German Tiger tank at anything other than the closest of ranges. During the desperate battle he knocked out three Tigers and a Panzer Mark IV. At the end of the war, preferring the anonymity of being a shoemaker in civi-street, Joe attempted to keep a low profile but over the years his achievement of knocking out the vaunted German SS panzer ace Michael Wittmann, denied him obscurity. Stung by some wilful misrepresentation of facts and his views, Joe has for the first time told his story for this DVD in full and in detail.Tim Saunders, a British Army officer for 30 years, he is now a full time military historian, with 13 titles in print. He has appeared in Time Team, Battlefield Detectives and Lost Evidence amongst other broadcasts. Tom Dormer has a true passion for military history. He regularly conducts authoritative and memorable tours of the WW1 and WW2 battlefields. Tom is a director of Battlefield History TV. Richard Hone, after 22 years in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, has lost none of his love for military vehicles. His knowledge of armoured vehicles and the soldiers who fought in them during WW2 is encyclopaedic. He is a master of his subject, with not just the facts and figures, but he also has a soldier's insight into how weapons and vehicles actually work on the battlefield.

With the same drama and excitement as Panzer Aces, Panzer Aces II relates the combat careers of six more decorated German Panzer officers. Extensively researched, these gripping accounts follow the men and their tanks across three continents into some of World War II’s bloodiest engagements. They campaigned with Rommel in the deserts of North Africa, participated in the monumental tank battle at Kursk, and, maneuvering only by muzzle flashes, fought frightening small-unit contests in the dark of night. Master tacticians and gutsy leaders, these men, including Hermann von Oppeln-Bronikowski, Kurt Knispel, Karl Nicolussi-Leck, and others, are legends.

The prowess of the German panzers is the stuff of legend, but it is not generally known that Hitler stole thousands of British, Czech, French, Italian, Polish, and Soviet tanks and armored fighting vehicles to feed his war machine. At its height, more than 25 percent of the German tank fleet was of foreign origin. In this meticulously research investigation, Anthony Tucker-Jones tells this hitherto unrecorded story, describing how captured fighting vehicles were reused by the German military throughout World War II.
