Odd electron organotransition metal complexes, once viewed as isolated exceptions to the 18-electron rule, are now recognized as a subset of compounds with unique reactivities. The identification of organometallic radicals as intermediates in the reaction mechanisms of even electron systems makes them increasingly important to the non-radical chemist as well. This book focuses on the generation, spectroscopic properties, structures, and reaction mechanisms exhibited by 17- and 19-electron organometallic complexes. The topics discussed center on transition metal complexes, although analogies to the chemistry of main group radicals are illustrated when appropriate. The material has been organized into ten self-contained chapters so that the reader can learn selectively about a particular area of interest. Two chapters focus on the techniques of electrochemistry and ESR spectroscopy, which are particularly suited to the study of organometallic radicals. Another chapter provides an overview of geometrical structrures for stable radicals.

"Inorganic and Organometallic Reaction Mechanisms, Second Edition covers both classic inorganic reaction mechanisms and organometallic reaction mechanisms. Introductions are provided for each group of reaction mechanisms, and extensive problems (many with references) are offered at the end of each chapter, as are summaries that provide students with thoughtful overviews." "This book is intended for advanced undergraduate and graduate students and instructors in inorganic and organometallic chemistry. It will also be a useful tutorial for organic chemists who use organometallic reagents for syntheses."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved

The original German version of this book is already a classic, and this comprehensive up-to-date English edition is THE organometallic textbook for all graduate students and lecturers of inorganic, organic, bioinorganic, coordination, and organometallic chemistry. This completely revised book has been expanded and updated to incorporate important developments in the field since the previous editions: the chapter on organometallic catalysis in synthesis and production appears for the first time in this form, bioorganometallic chemistry has been considerably strengthened, and a new chapter on the organometallic chemistry of the lanthanoids and actinoids has been added. Homogeneous catalysis is the success story of organometallic chemistry. Since the discovery of hydroformylation by O. Roelen in 1938, catalytic applications have paved the way of organometallic compounds in industry. Bulk and fine chemicals, and even natural products are being produced via homogeneous organometallic catalysis. The enormous breadth of this topic in view of both basic research and industrial application is met in this three volume handbook edited jointly by W. A. Herrmann and B. Cornils. The list of contributors reads like a who-is-who in organometallic chemistry and homogeneous catalysis. In this handbook, experts will find the current state-of-the-art in their field and advanced students will benefit from the concise treatment of important catalytic reactions and processes. With its balanced presentation of the truly interdisciplinary topic and its outstanding editor- and authorship, the 'Cornils/Herrmann' is beyond common standards. Now in its second, completely revised and enlarged edition!

Bridges the gap between the typical organic and organometallic texts by providing a current overall description of the chemistry of organometallics in organic synthesis in a digested form. Offers a highly systematic and logical account of virtually all the important aspects of the use of organometallics in organic synthesis. Primarily treats the reactant-product relationship, as well as some tentative but reasonable interpretations provided by the authors of individual papers and the author of this book. Over 1,200 references are cited, along with the great majority of relevant reviews and monographs.
