Explores the breadth and versatility of Human Systems Engineering (HSE) practices and illustrates its value in system development A Framework of Human Systems Engineering: Applications and Case Studies offers a guide to identifying and improving methods to integrate human concerns into the conceptualization and design of systems. With contributions from a panel of noted experts on the topic, the book presents a series of Human Systems Engineering (HSE) applications on a wide range of topics: interface design, training requirements, personnel capabilities and limitations, and human task allocation. Each of the book's chapters present a case study of the application of HSE from different dimensions of socio-technical systems. The examples are organized using a socio-technical system framework to reference the applications across multiple system types and domains. These case studies are based in real-world examples and highlight the value of applying HSE to the broader engineering community. This important book: Includes a proven framework with case studies to different dimensions of practice, including domain, system type, and system maturity Contains the needed tools and methods in order to integrate human concerns within systems Encourages the use of Human Systems Engineering throughout the design process Provides examples that cross traditional system engineering sectors and identifies a diverse set of human engineering practices Written for systems engineers, human factors engineers, and HSI practitioners, A Framework of Human Systems Engineering: Applications and Case Studies provides the information needed for the better integration of human and systems and early resolution of issues based on human constraints and limitations.

This book is dedicated to the memory of Professor Alessandro (Sandro) D'Atri, who passed away in April 2011. Professor D'Atri started his career as a brilliant scholar interested in theoretical computer science, databases and, more generally information processing systems. He journeyed far in various applications, such as human-computer interaction, human factors, ultimately arriving at business information systems and business organisation after more than 20 years of researc hbased on "problem solving". Professor D'Atri pursued the development of an interdisciplinary culture in which social sciences, systems design and human sciences are mutually integrated. Rather than retrospection, this book is aimed to advance in these directions and to stimulate a debate about the potential of design research in the field of information systems and organisation studies with an interdisciplinary approach. Each chapter has been selected by the Editorial Board following a double blind peer review process. The general criteria of privileging the variety of topics and the design science orientation and/or empirical works in which a design research approach is adopted to solve various field problems in the management area. In addition several chapters contribute to the meta-discourse on design science research.

In twelve essays, influential scholars in political science explore the meaning of political leadership from the kaleidoscopic perspectives of the leaders, institutions, goals, procedures, problems, and traditions involved. The approaches, as varied as the subject itself, coalesce around the central question of how leaders interact with, transform, or are controlled by the organizations they lead.

Following an in-depth discussion of the theoretical underpinnings of successful entrepreneurship, the authors show how to apply the theory in actual practice. They demonstrate how to analyze the entrepreneurial firm's stage of development and then focus specifically on problems linked to that stage, how to use the Success/Failure grid as an analysis tool, and how to capitalize on favorable conditions and opportunities. A book for aspiring entrepreneurs both within and outside of established corporations, this book introduces a new perspective on the subject that both refutes individualistic myths about entrepreneurship and provides a specific theory about successful entrepreneurial activity. The authors point to the need for entrepreneurial systems--collections of individuals working together--as the real key to successful ventures. . . . By painting a more accurate picture of how entrepreneurial ventures really work, and then offering sound advice to prospective entrepreneurs on how to achieve lasting success, this book makes a major contribution to the business literature. Money World A book for aspiring entrepreneurs both within and outside of established corporations, this book introduces a new perspectve on the subject that both refutes individualistic myths about entrepreneurship and provides a specific theory about successful entrepreneurial activity. The authors point to the need for entrepreneurial systems--collections of individuals working together--as the real key to successful ventures. They argue that there are four essential elements that must be present and operating in concert if entrepreneurship is to succeed: characteristics, competencies, conditions, and contexts. Following an in-depth discussion of the theoretical underpinnngs of successful entrepreneurship, the authors show how to apply the theory in actual practice. Planning tools like the Four C Conference--in which an assessment of each of the four necessary elements is made--and the Concert of Components Conference will enable the individual entrepreneur to begin to set up a workable entrepreneurial system. The authors demonstrate how to analyze the entrepreneurial firm's stage of development and then focus specifically on problems linked to that stage, how to use the success/failure grid as an analysis tool, and how to capitalize on favorable conditions and opportunities. By painting a more accurate picture of how entrepreneurial ventures really work--and then offering sound advice to prospective entrepreneurs on how to achieve lasting success--this book makes a major contribution to the business literature.
