For decades fruit growers have sprayed their trees with toxic chemicals in an attempt to control a range of insect and fungal pests. Yet it is possible to grow apples responsibly, by applying the intuitive knowledge of our great-grandparents with the fruits of modern scientific research and innovation. Since The Apple Grower first appeared in 1998, orchardist Michael Phillips has continued his research with apples, which have been called “organic’s final frontier.” In this new edition of his widely acclaimed work, Phillips delves even deeper into the mysteries of growing good fruit with minimal inputs. Some of the cutting-edge topics he explores include: The use of kaolin clay as an effective strategy against curculio and borers, as well as its limitations Creating a diverse, healthy orchard ecosystem through understory management of plants, nutrients, and beneficial microorganisms How to make a small apple business viable by focusing on heritage and regional varieties, value-added products, and the “community orchard” model The author’s personal voice and clear-eyed advice have already made The Apple Grower a classic among small-scale growers and home orchardists. In fact, anyone serious about succeeding with apples needs to have this updated edition on their bookshelf.

This is the third time that Productive Orcharding has been revised in order to keep its teachings abreast of the times. In a vigorous and growing industry like the fruit business, with an army of alert research men constantly at work on the problems of the orchardist, and with consequent changes in methods and ideas constantly occurring, it is not possible, unless by a daily revision, to exclude all ideas which may have been called in question. But the attempt has been made to include all of the ideas which might be said to be generally accepted by progressive fruit growers and instructors. It is, of course, impossible in a general treatise of this kind to include a detailed discussion of all the matters presented. It is hoped that the essentials have been included and that students or fruit growers who may want further details will be led to search for these from other and more specialized sources. An analysis of the orchard enterprises into twenty jobs, and analyses of these jobs into teaching layouts are added to this edition.

Agricultural primary production is essential for maintaining human life. Sustaining the productivity of soils is essential for future generations, and the way to maintaining soil productivity is often disputed. Organic farming has good attributes as it works with nature rather than against it. Its principles and objectives are achieving good crop yiels by using techniques which minimize the human impact on the environment. If intensive agriculture could allow big yields, the large quantities of pesticides and other chemicals used are known to negatively impact the ecosystems. Moreover, the practice of intensive farming is out of the reach of poor resource farmers in the tropics. Organic farming can allow resolving the problem of wastes disposal that human beings have to get ride of, and which are valuable source of nutrients for plants, and serve the purpose for soil conditioners. On the other hand, in the world, the big use of wood to produce bioenergy generates huge quantities of wood ash which is a source of worries. Wood ash, known to be rich in nutrients and lime could be returned to depleted soils as supplement to organic fertilizers by suitable management practices.
