As deregulation and privatization become more accepted in the electricity industry, different challenges facing power systems under deregulation are discussed. A new methodology for solving multi-period optimal power flow (OPF) is formulated . The objective is to determine the optimum cost of system operation in a multi-period setup, without violating congestion and unit ramping rate constraints. An incremental formulation is applied to the OPF/MLC (Minimum Load Curtailment) problem to facilitate the inclusion of ramping rate constraints. In addition, a backtrack procedure is developed to resolve infeasibility occurring from insufficient ramping down capacity by rescheduling units at previous operating points. Extremely high computational resources are not needed to solve this problem due to the approximation adopted in this work. The developed incremental methodology is applied to three different systems. The third application system is the Lebanese Electric Power System. The adjustments done by the backtrack method are explained and justified. And the adopted approximation to the objective function was verified to be valid. The differences between static and multi-period system operation are also shown and explained.--Ramp rate limits were found to have the effect of increasing the incremental cost of system operation in order to maintain supply to consumers. Also, they may introduce some additional load sheds to the system.
