"As optimization techniques have developed, a gap has arisen between the people devising the methods and the people who actually need to use them. Research into methods is necessarily long-term and located usually in academic establishments; whereas the application of an optimization technique, normally in an industrial environment, has to be justified financially in the short term. The gap is probably inevitable; but there is no need for textbooks to reflect it. Teaching of optimization techniques separately from their connection with applications is pointless. This book gives a detailed exposition of the techniques. In this first volume, T.A.J. Nicholson demonstrates the full range of techniques available to the practitioner for the solution of varying problems. For each technique, the background reasoning behind its development is explained in simple terms; where helpful it is supported by a geometrical argument; and the iterative algorithm for finding the optimum is defined clearly. These steps enable the reader not only to see plainly what is happening in the method but also to reach a level of understanding necessary to write computer programs for optimization techniques. Problems are tackled in the same way--by searching a feasible region for an optimum. This approach helps the reader to develop the most essential of all skills--selecting appropriate techniques for different circumstances. The numerous worked examples in the text, supported by worked solutions, and the exercises at the end of the chapters are important aids to learning and to teachers. This book serves as an introduction to optimization techniques for students as well as a reference work for the practitioner in business and industry."--Provided by publisher.

The origin of any industrial optimization study lies in the theory that some improvement can be made in a controllable system. The possibility for improvements may arise in any context, for example, in the control of a chemical plant, the organization of production to meet delivery dates, the design of rubber compounds, in traffic signal settings, and so on. In this volume, T. A. J. Nicholson deals with applications of the industrial optimization techniques demonstrated in the first volume of this two-part project, Optimization in Industry: Optimization Techniques.Applications are classified by their main functional areas in industrial planning, design, and control. The fields covered are machine sequencing, stock control and scheduling, plant renewal, distribution, financial problems, and chemical process control and design. These last two, in particular, are subjects often overlooked in operations research curricula. In each field the place and status of optimization techniques is first described and then a wide range of realistic case studies and examples are reviewed, many of them international. The problems given in this volume are primarily concerned with formulation not with solution; the task is to formulate the problems to be solved by one or more of the methods described in volume one.By connecting the optimization techniques with their applications, the gap between the people devising the methods and the people who actually need to use them is bridged. As with the first volume, this text is also supported by new exercises and model answers making this book important as an introduction to the application of optimization techniques for students as well as a reference work for the practitioner.

This book recapitulates the significance of metal composites in modern sustainable industry, along with the critical review of process optimization techniques and tribological aspects for industrial and automotive applications. The book aims to cover all the topics relevant to the mechanical characteristics of metal matrix composites (MMCs) such as reinforcement types (particles, short fiber, and long or continuous fibers), their effect on the microstructure of composites, and significance in enhancing the materials’ mechanical and physical properties. The first two chapters aim to provide detailed learning about recent industrial advancements of diverse metal composites: aluminum, copper, and magnesium, and their significance in the modern workable industry. The next two chapters highlight a detailed analysis of particle, short-fiber, and continuous-fiber materials used for composite fabrication. Further chapters discuss the behavior of composites under various testing conditions, process optimization techniques, tribological technologies, lubrication knowledge including additives and lubricants, and improvements to the tribological properties of MMCs for industrial and automotive applications. Industrial Composites, Optimization Methods, and Tribological Considerations is an essential book for experts, scientists, and engineers who are involved in the domain of composite materials, tribology, and process optimization.

Effective utilization of equipment is critical to any manufacturing operation, especially with today's sophisticated, high-cost equipment and increased global competition. To meet these challenges in the manufacturing industry, you must understand and implement the myriad conventional and intelligent techniques for different types of manufacturing problems. Manufacturing Optimization Through Intelligent Techniques covers design of machine elements, integrated product development, machining tolerance allocation, selection of operating parameters for CNC machine tools, scheduling, part family formation, selection of robot coordinates, robot trajectory planning and both conventional and intelligent techniques, providing the tools to design and implement a suitable optimization technique. The author explores how to model optimization problems, select suitable techniques, develop the optimization algorithm and software, and implement the program. The book delineates five new techniques using examples taken from the literature for optimization problems in design, tolerance allocation; selection of machining parameters, integrated product development, scheduling, concurrent formation of machine groups and part families, selection of robot co-ordinates, robot trajectory planning and intelligent machining. All the manufacturing functions described have been successfully solved by Genetic Algorithm. Other intelligent techniques have been implemented only for solving certain types of problems: simulated annealing; design and scheduling, particle swarm optimization and ant colony optimization; tolerance allocation and tabu search; as well as machining parameters optimization. After reading this book, you will understand the different types of manufacturing optimization problems as well as the conventional and intelligent techniques suitable for solving them. You will also be able to develop and implement effective optimization procedures and algorithms for a wide variety of problems in design manufacturing.

Trends and perspectives in dynamic environments point towards a need for optimal operating levels in reconfigurable manufacturing activities. Central to the goal of meeting this need is the issue of appropriate techniques for manufacturing process planning optimization in reconfigurable manufacturing, i.e. (i) what decision making models and (ii) what computational techniques, provide an optimal manufacturing process planning solution in a multidimensional decision variables space? Conventional optimization techniques are not robust, hence; they are not suitable for handling multidimensional search spaces. On the other hand, process planning optimization for reconfigurable manufacturing is not amenable to classical modeling approaches due to the presence of complex system dynamics. Therefore, this study explores how to model reconfigurable manufacturing activities in an optimization perspective and how to develop and select appropriate non-conventional optimization techniques for reconfigurable process planning. In this study, a new approach to modeling Manufacturing Process Planning Optimization (MPPO) was developed by extending the concept of manufacturing optimization through a decoupled optimization method. The uniqueness of this approach lies in embedding an integrated scheduling function into a partially integrated process planning function in order to exploit the strategic potentials of flexibility and reconfigurability in manufacturing systems. Alternative MPPO models were constructed and variances associated with their utilization analyzed. Five (5) Alternative Algorithm Design Techniques (AADTs) were developed and investigated for suitability in providing process planning solutions suitable for reconfigurable manufacturing. The five (5) AADTs include; a variant of the simulated annealing algorithm that implements heuristic knowledge at critical decision points, two (2) cooperative search schemes based on a "loose hybridization" of the Boltzmann Machine algo.
