Master's Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Business economics - Company formation, Business Plans, grade: 1,0, Technical University of Munich (TUM School of Management), language: English, abstract: This thesis is approaching this issue of opportunity recognition based on team creative cognition and a product-oriented view at creativity, and thus at how the team discussion process of idea-generation is shaping entrepreneurial opportunities. Substantial gains can be made by entrepreneurial teams when recognizing promising business ideas. Academic research at the intersection of entrepreneurship and cognition has thus recently focused on how entrepreneurial teams generate business ideas and opportunities in order to understand the team decision processes of recognizing original and feasible opportunities. Therefore, creativity (original and feasible outcome) in its multifaceted cognitive manner plays an essential role in generating ideas. However, empirical research on the influence of entrepreneurial team cognition (ETC) on the generation, recognition, and configuration of such ideas is still lacking. Based on existing literature in creative cognition the entire idea-generation process is operationalized through convergent and divergent thinking phases and analyzed through conducting a quantitative experiment to examine possible relationships between the created variables. It turns out, that in convergent thinking, entrepreneurial teams generated and recognized less original but more feasible idea sets and final opportunities. In this regard, divergent thinking has an enhancement effect on original sets of ideas. These first findings are finally discussed against the background of ETC and shown to help to facilitate entrepreneurship research in this context to new insights separated from personal creativity skills, and further to assist entrepreneurs in recognizing opportunities in a practical way.

Understanding Opportunity Recognition Process In Entrepreneurship And Consideration Of Whether Serial Entrepreneurs Undertake Opportunity Recognition Better Than Novice Entrepreneurs written by Peter Odiri Rhima and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006 with categories.
This research study is designed to improve general understanding of how entrepreneurs recognize opportunity, and in particular whether serial entrepreneurs undertake opportunity recognition better than novice entrepreneurs. In today's society, some individuals recognize viable business opportunities where many others see only problems, or even worse, nothing at all. Opportunities are everywhere, yet many people do not see them. Entrepreneurs, however, have the capacity to see what others do not see. Based on a theoretical framework established at the Cambridge University, Judge Business School-Center for International Business Management and research, we developed an electronic survey instrument to better understand how serial entrepreneurs recognize opportunities more than others, which is used in our analysis to isolate the most important cognitive habits reported by serial entrepreneurs. The target group of our research was entrepreneurs in the Southern California region who agreed to respond to a web based survey. Our conclusion, on the basis of this limited study, serial entrepreneurs reported higher level of tolerance for risk taking, a greater appreciation for the value of new technology and a higher priority towards achieving financial success. This analysis is significant because it highlights the crucial patterns of thoughts associated with successful serial entrepreneurs. We expect this research will eventually contribute to improved training of opportunity recognition for potential entrepreneurs by adding to the international literature on this topic.

The textbook contains a comprehensive presentation of tools that can be used to systematically generate innovative ideas for new business growth ("opportunities"). In practice, it can be observed that companies make considerable efforts to identify ideas for innovations that can decisively shape their industry. The reason for this is not least the knowledge that a missed wave of innovation can lead to major problems for the entire company. A central finding of business management research is that ideas for generating future growth opportunities are often not a product of chance, but the results of systematic analyses. The authors provide a structured and comprehensive overview of the most important tools for identifying new growth opportunities. They distinguish between company-related, market-related and environment-related approaches, incorporate numerous practical examples and provide application-oriented assistance with these tools. The second edition of the book incorporates the latest research findings, some examples have been updated and supplemented, and the book has been expanded to include practical application tasks for teaching and practical workshops.

This dissertation clarifies individual differences in opportunity recognition as a precursor to starting a new business. Using a contingency perspective, time pressure and uncertainty are hypothesized to moderate the effects of individual attributes – entrepreneurial self-efficacy, tolerance of uncertainty, and prior experience – on opportunity recognition. This framework answers the question whether certain individuals can leverage tensions to their benefit more than others. In this study, opportunity recognition has been operationalized by two technology-centric tasks and measured as opportunity quantity and quality. A total of 227 usable responses were collected from students enrolled at the Bloch’s REP program through an on-line experiment. I implemented negative binomial and linear regression analyses to measure quantity and quality respectively, and to test the individual differences of the focal variables. The analytical results demonstrate different main effects of entrepreneurial self-efficacy on quantity and quality. More importantly, the results deny the commonly-held assumption that time pressure and uncertainty adversely affect all individuals. My findings reinforce the importance of cultivating tolerance of uncertainty in students and practicing entrepreneurs for effective decision-making under high pressure business situations. This study’s theoretical framework has implications for research on opportunity recognition involving technology, and for policies designed to increase entrepreneurial behaviors.

The Role Of Entrepreneurial Cognition In Opportunity Recognition And Business Model Development written by Isabelle Siegrist and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015 with categories.
Entrepreneurs have individual specific cognitional resources that facilitate the recognition of new opportunities and the capability to assemble business models for a venture. This paper brings the main activities of an entrepreneur's foundation phase (opportunity recognition, entry decision and business model development) into a process perspective were the steps are moderated by entrepreneurial cognition, heuristics and the environment. Six case studies where conducted to examine heterogeneous cognitions of entrepreneurs. The findings show that cognition is central in formation of conjectures for opportunity recognition and depends on the entrepreneur's individual characteristics such as their human capital (education differences between technological and managerial backgrounds), search modes (active or affect) and their social capital (network strength). The decision on when opportunity should be pursued is influenced by knowledge backgrounds (entrepreneurs think in patterns and evaluate opportunities based on prior knowledge) and feedback (social competence, network accessibility and search mechanisms). When starting to build their business, entrepreneurs model it differently depending on their knowledge and opportunity search type (technological backgrounds start with product if conducting an altered search, managerial backgrounds start with markets). Entrepreneurs show a similar use in pattern attribution and change identification, which leads to business model adaptation.
