Annotation Deploy and optimize your wireless LAN using the new standard for broadband wireless communication, OFDM. A comprehensive reference written by two experts who helped create the OFDM specifications. A detailed, practical guide to OFDM WLANs does not exist, requiring readers to seek out multiple sources of information, such as white papers and research notes. Detailed explanations of the concepts and algorithms behind OFDM-context that is missing from the two OFDM books currently available. This book explains OFDM WLAN basics, including components of OFDM and multicarrier WLAN standards. It provides a practical approach to OFDM by including software and hardware examples and detailed implementation explanations. OFDM Multicarrier Wireless Networks: A Practical Approach defines and explains the mathematical concepts behind OFDM necessary for successful OFDM WLAN implementations. Juha Heiskala is a research engineer at Nokia Research Center in Irving, TX. Heiskala is active in the IEEE 802.11 standards bodies and has been tasked with developing the 802.11a system simulation on several software platforms. He is the inventor/co-inventor of three pending patents in the area of OFDM LANs and co-designed with Dr. John Terry the modulation and coding scheme for achieving 100 Mbps speeds within currently allocated band specifications for OFDM WLANs. John Terry, Ph.D. is a senior research engineer at Nokia Research Center. He is currently managing the OFDM modulation and coding project in the HSA group. Dr. Terry has published several white papers, given numerous presentations on wireless communications, and generated four patents related to OFDM WLANs. He has 10 years of experience working in wireless communications, including tenures at NASA Glen Research Center and Texas Instruments.

Today's integrated silicon circuits and systems for wireless communications are of a huge complexity. This unique compendium covers all the steps (from the system-level to the transistor-level) necessary to design, model, verify, implement, and test a silicon system. It bridges the gap between the system-world and the transistor-world (between communication, system, circuit, device, and test engineers). It is extremely important nowadays (and will be more important in the future) for communication, system, and circuit engineers to understand the physical implications of system and circuit solutions based on hardware/software co-design as well as for device and test engineers to cope with the system and circuit requirements in terms of power, speed, and data throughput.Related Link(s)

OFDM systems have experienced increased attention in recent years and have found applications in a number of diverse areas including telephone-line based ADSL links, digital audio and video broadcasting systems, and wireless local area networks (WLAN). Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) is a powerful technique for high data-rate transmission over fading channels. However, to deploy OFDM in a WLAN environment, precise frequency synchronization must be maintained and tricky frequency offsets must be handled. In this thesis, various techniques to improve the data throughput of OFDM WLAN are investigated. A simulation tool was developed in Matlab to evaluate the performance of the IEEE 802.1la physical layer. We propose a rapid time and frequency synchronization algorithm using only the short training sequence of the IEEE 802.1la standard, thus reducing the training overhead by 50%. Particular attention was paid to channel coding, block interleaving and antenna diversity. Computer simulation showed that drastic improvement in error rate performance is achievable when these techniques are deployed.
