For the ?rst time four workshops have been held in conjunction with the 8th Object-Oriented Information Systems conference, OOIS 2002, to encourage - teraction between researchers and practitioners. Workshop topics are, of course, inline with the conference’s scienti?c scope and provide a forum for groups of researchers and practitioners to meet together more closely and to exchange opinions and advanced ideas, and to share preliminary results on focused issues in an atmosphere that fosters interaction and problem solving. The conference hosted four one-day workshops. The four selected workshops were fully in the spirit of a workshop session hosted by a main conference. Indeed, OOIS deals with all the topics related to the use of object-oriented techniques for the development of information systems. The four workshops are very speci?c and contribute to enlarging the spectrum of the more general topics treated in the main conference. The ?rst workshop focused on a very speci?c and key c- cept of object-oriented development, the specialization/generalization hierarchy. The second one explored the use of “non-traditional” approaches (at the edge of object-oriented techniques, such as aspects, AI, etc.) to improve reuse. The third workshop dealt with optimization in Web-based information systems. And ?nally the fourth workshop investigated issues related to model-driven software development.

The conference on Object Oriented Information Systems (OOIS) is now an es- blished international conference where innovative ideas, research, applications, and experiences in the design, development, and use of object oriented infor- tionsystems,fromboththeacademicandindustrialenvironments,arepresented. The ninth OOIS conference was held at the University of Geneva, September 2–5, 2003. The main theme was the Evolution of Object Oriented Information Systems. The papers presented ideas and issues related to the evolution, ad- tability, restructuring, and ?exibility of OOIS. In the context of the conference, ?ve workshops and four tutorials were organized providing a discussion forum for new ideas and including in depth presentations on important “hot” subjects. An information system (IS) is a system composed of people and computers that processes or interprets information. The term is also sometimes used in more restricted senses to refer to only the software used to run a computerized database or to refer to only a computer system. The plural term information systems (construed as singular) is also used for the actual academic study of the field, in other words for the study of complementary networks of hardware and software that people and organizations use to collect, filter, process, create and distribute data. Any specific information system aims to support operations, management and decision making. In a broad sense, the term is used to refer not only to the information and communication technology (ICT) that an organization uses, but also to the way in which people interact with this technology in support of business processes. Some authors make a clear distinction between information systems, computer systems, and business processes. Information systems typically include an ICT component but are not purely concerned with ICT, focusing instead on the end use of information technology. Information systems are also different from business processes. Information systems help to control the performance of business processes. Alter argues for advantages of viewing an information system as a special type of work system. A work system is a system in which humans and/or machines perform work (processes and activities) using resources to produce specific products and/or services for customers. An information system is a work system whose activities are devoted to processing (capturing, transmitting, storing, retrieving, manipulating and displaying) information. As such, information systems inter-relate with data systems on the one hand and activity systems on the other. An information system is a form of communication system in which data represent and are processed as a form of social memory. An information system can also be considered a semi-formal language which supports human decision making and action. Information systems are the primary focus of study for organizational informatics.

Welcome to 00lS'01 and Calgary! This is the 7th International Conference on Object-Oriented Information Systems (OOlS) that focus on Object-Oriented and Web-Based Frameworks for Information Systems. Users of information systems are increasingly demanding higher performance, mobility, and personalization in order to realize the dream to access and obtain necessary information anywhere and anytime. The new development requires the investigation of new architectures, frameworks, processes, and inter-connectivity of information systems at society, organization, team, and personal levels. This volume contains the papers presented at the Third International Conference on Object Oriented Information Systems (00lS'96) which was held at South Bank University, London. The keynote addresses, by Professor Colette Roland and Mr Ian Graham, are also included. The acceptance rate for papers was around 47%. The papers for the Industry Day were invited papers. The keynote paper by Professor Roland analyses the challenges in object modelling, particularly the impact of requirements engineering for conceptual modelling. She suggests innovative research perspectives to enhance and extend object oriented approaches in order to deal with the emerging area of requirements engineering. The keynote paper presented by Mr. Graham focuses on the problems and solutions for adopting use cases. In his paper, Graham illustrates the theoretical issues and practical problems of use cases, and highlights them using examples. The papers included in this volume cover different aspects of object modelling, object oriented software development, object databases, and interoperability. In the modelling session, Ram, et al. outline an extended object model to tackle the problems of capturing complex requirements of office information systems. Simons' paper concentrates on core object modelling concepts and presents a mathematical theory of class.
