This book deals with various aspects of scientific numerical computing. No at tempt was made to be complete or encyclopedic. The successful solution of a numerical problem has many facets and consequently involves different fields of computer science. Computer numerics- as opposed to computer algebra- is thus based on applied mathematics, numerical analysis and numerical computation as well as on certain areas of computer science such as computer architecture and operating systems. Applied Mathemalies I I I Numerical Analysis Analysis, Algebra I I Numerical Computation Symbolic Computation I Operating Systems Computer Hardware Each chapter begins with sample situations taken from specific fields of appli cation. Abstract and general formulations of mathematical problems are then presented. Following this abstract level, a general discussion about principles and methods for the numerical solution of mathematical problems is presented. Relevant algorithms are developed and their efficiency and the accuracy of their results is assessed. It is then explained as to how they can be obtained in the form of numerical software. The reader is presented with various ways of applying the general methods and principles to particular classes of problems and approaches to extracting practically useful solutions with appropriately chosen numerical software are developed. Potential difficulties and obstacles are examined, and ways of avoiding them are discussed. The volume and diversity of all the available numerical software is tremendous.

Developed during ten years of teaching experience, this book serves as a set of lecture notes for an introductory course on numerical computation, at the senior undergraduate level. These notes contain the material that can be covered in a semester, together with a few optional sections for additional reading. Rather than surveying a large number of algorithms, the book presents the most important computational methods and emphasizes the underlying mathematical ideas. In most chapters, graphs and drawings are relied on, to build up intuition. The notes are written in a rather colloquial style, presenting the subject matter in the same form as it can be explained in a classroom. For instructors, this will minimize the amount of effort required to prepare their blackboard presentations. As prerequisites, the book only relies on standard calculus, an introductory course on matrices, and some basic computer programming skills. As a new feature, these notes are supplemented by two sets of videos from the author's Youtube channel. These videos contain a complete set of live lectures given in Spring 2015, together with a complete set of short tutorials, from 5 to 15 minutes each.A set of homework problems is included at the end of each chapter. Homework projects cover a variety of applications, in connection with population dynamics, engineering, mechanics, image reconstruction, etc. A complete set of solutions is available for instructors, upon request.

Numerical analysis explains why numerical computations work, or fail. This book is divided into four parts. Part I starts Part I starts with a guided tour of floating number systems and machine arithmetic. The exponential and the logarithm are constructed from scratch to present a new point of view on questions well-known to the reader, and the needed knowledge of linear algebra is summarized. Part II starts with polynomial approximation (polynomial interpolation, mean-square approximation, splines). It then deals with Fourier series, providing the trigonometric version of least square approximations, and one of the most important numerical algorithms, the fast Fourier transform. Any scientific computation program spends most of its time solving linear systems or approximating the solution of linear systems, even when trying to solve non-linear systems. Part III is therefore about numerical linear algebra, while Part IV treats a selection of non-linear or complex problems: resolution of linear equations and systems, ordinary differential equations, single step and multi-step schemes, and an introduction to partial differential equations. The book has been written having in mind the advanced undergraduate students in mathematics who are interested in the spice and spirit of numerical analysis. The book does not assume previous knowledge of numerical methods. It will also be useful to scientists and engineers wishing to learn what mathematics has to say about the reason why their numerical methods work - or fail.
