Antionio del Pollaiuolo (1431-1498) was a renowned Florentine painter, sculptor, draftsman and goldsmith who was particularly admired for his dynamic and expressive portrayal of the human figure. He carried out a wide range of projects, but a relatively small number of his works survive, and he is perhaps most widely known for his magnificent engraving, Battle of the Nudes. The Cleveland Museum of Art's unique first state of the Battle of the Nudes has long been regarded as the exemplary early impression, printed before the plate began to wear and was supposedly re-engraved by another hand. All other known impressions are second states, pulled from the reworked plate.

The representation of the nude in art remained for many centuries a victory of fiction over fact. Beautiful, handsome, flawless its great success was to distance the unclothed body from any uncomfortably explicit taint of sexuality, eroticism or imperfection. In this newly updated study, Frances Borzello contrasts the civilized, sanitized, perfected nude of Kenneth Clarks classic, The Nude: A Study in Ideal Form (1956), with todays depictions: raw, uncomfortable, both disturbing and intriguing. Grittier and more subtle, depicting variously gendered bodies, the new nude asks awkward questions and behaves provocatively. It is a very naked nude, created to deal with the issues and contradictions that surround the body in our time. Borzello explores the role of the nude in twentieth- and twenty-first-century art, looking at the work of a wide range of international artists creating contemporary nudes. Her fascinating text is complemented by a profusion of well-chosen, unusual and beautifully reproduced illustrations. The story begins with a tale of life, death and resurrection an investigation into how and why the nude has survived and flourished in an art world that prematurely announced its demise. Between 1995 and 2002, Denver-based photographer Jefferson Powers shot a series of fine art nudes. His living room was his studio, with bedsheets hung on the walls and furniture shoved into the corners. His lights were cheap garage-style clamp lights, clamped to the edges of bookshelves. His models were friends, acquaintances, and sometimes near total strangers who he worked up the nerve to ask to pose. None of them were professional models, although a few went on to pursue careers in modeling and acting. He developed his film and prints in a basement darkroom with equipment that was old when he got it, and would be considered positively archaic now. Much of this work was shown in local galleries and coffee shops, and has been featured on several websites and in a print anthology. One image even made it onto a poster for a local theater production. However, this is the first definitive collection of Jefferson's fine art nude images.
