At the end of the twentieth century, nonlinear dynamics turned out to be one of the most challenging and stimulating ideas. Notions like bifurcations, attractors, chaos, fractals, etc. have proved to be useful in explaining the world around us, be it natural or artificial. However, much of our everyday understanding is still based on linearity, i. e. on the additivity and the proportionality. The larger the excitation, the larger the response-this seems to be carved in a stone tablet. The real world is not always reacting this way and the additivity is simply lost. The most convenient way to describe such a phenomenon is to use a mathematical term-nonlinearity. The importance of this notion, i. e. the importance of being nonlinear is nowadays more and more accepted not only by the scientific community but also globally. The recent success of nonlinear dynamics is heavily biased towards temporal characterization widely using nonlinear ordinary differential equations. Nonlinear spatio-temporal processes, i. e. nonlinear waves are seemingly much more complicated because they are described by nonlinear partial differential equations. The richness of the world may lead in this case to coherent structures like solitons, kinks, breathers, etc. which have been studied in detail. Their chaotic counterparts, however, are not so explicitly analysed yet. The wavebearing physical systems cover a wide range of phenomena involving physics, solid mechanics, hydrodynamics, biological structures, chemistry, etc.

This monograph is devoted to problems of propagation and stability of linear and nonlinear waves in continuous media with complex structure. It considers the different media, such as solid with cavities, preliminary deformed disperse medium, solid with porosity filled by the electrically conductive and non-conductive liquid, magnetoelastic, piezo-semiconductors, crystals with dislocations, composites with inclusions, an electrically conductive asymmetrical liquid, a mixture of gas with a drop liquid. The book also considers the propagation of a laser beam through a two-level medium. The presented results are based on methods of evolution and modulation equations that were developed by the authors. The book is intended for scientific and technical researchers, students and post-graduate students specializing in mechanics of continuous media, physical acoustics, and physics of the solid state.

This symposium brought together mechanicians, physicists and applied mathematicians to discuss the interdisciplinary topic of nonlinear wave motion, which displays effects that give rise to a multitude of unanswered questions. Nonlinear waves in fluids in particular display all the prominent nonlinear phenomena such as chaos, turbulence and pattern formation. Amongst the topics emphasized in these proceedings are: travelling fronts, solitary waves and periodic waves (dissipative and conservative); temporal and spatial asymptotics of perturbations of waves; bifurcations, stability and local dynamics of waves; interaction between different waves, and between waves and the mean flow; wave breaking, nonlinear effects on focussing and diffraction; modulation and envelope equations (their derivation and validity); and numerical and experimental results.

Nonlinear Wave Dynamics In Space Plasmas written by John Z G Ma and has been published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-07 with categories.
This is a companion monograph to Ma & St-Maurice: Ion Kinetic Theory of Auroral Plasmas, LAP Lambert Academic Publishing, 2011. Nonlinear waves observed in space plasmas are featured by simple-wave solitary structures and amplitude-modulated oscilliton wavepackets. Their wavefields are so strong that the traditional weak-field KdV formulation is not suitable to be adopted. A self-similar two-fluid model is thus used to account for the excitation, propagation, and effects of large-amplitude solitary waves in space plasmas. Both Cartesian and cylindrical geometries are considered. After introducing two mathematical methods usually used for classical solitary waves, generic, exact modelings are described on a step-by-step basis to characterize the evolution from amplitude-unmodulated simple-wave soliton modes to amplitude-modulated oscilliton ones. The effects of nonlinear waves on transverse ion heating and ion-cyclotron frequency broadening are discussed in details by employing a simple magnetic flux tube model. A summary and limitations of the work are also addressed. The research was also guided by Professor Akira Hirose, Canada Research Chair, University of Saskatchewan, Canada.

A non-linear wave is one of the fundamental objects of nature. They are inherent to aerodynamics and hydrodynamics, solid state physics and plasma physics, optics and field theory, chemistry reaction kinetics and population dynamics, nuclear physics and gravity. All non-linear waves can be divided into two parts: dispersive waves and dissipative ones. The history of investigation of these waves has been lasting about two centuries. In 1834 J. S. Russell discovered the extraordinary type of waves without the dispersive broadening. In 1965 N. J. Zabusky and M. D. Kruskal found that the Korteweg-de Vries equation has solutions of the solitary wave form. This solitary wave demonstrates the particle-like properties, i. e. , stability under propagation and the elastic interaction under collision of the solitary waves. These waves were named solitons. In succeeding years there has been a great deal of progress in understanding of soliton nature. Now solitons have become the primary components in many important problems of nonlinear wave dynamics. It should be noted that non-linear optics is the field, where all soliton features are exhibited to a great extent. This book had been designed as the tutorial to the theory of non-linear waves in optics. The first version was projected as the book covering all the problems in this field, both analytical and numerical methods, and results as well. However, it became evident in the process of work that this was not a real task.

Research investigations involving the nonlinear wave propagation that arise in physically significant systems have been carried out Applications include modeling and computational studies of wave phenomena in nonlinear optics, solutions of physically significant nonlinear equations, chaotic wave dynamics in physical systems and inverse scattering. There have been a number of important research contributions. During the past three years 19 papers were published or accepted for publication in refereed journals, 4 book chapters were published or accepted, and 14 invited lectures were given. New methods to find solutions to discrete equations in a nonlinear optical fiber array were discovered. Discrete diffraction managed systems and associated solitons were proposed. This work is relevant to recent experiments involving discrete optical waveguides. Experimental arrays occupy 5 microns in width and a total length of 2-5 millimeters. From first principles, the equations governing discrete systems in nonlinear optical arrays as well as discrete diffraction managed systems have been derived. The concept of dispersion management is being applied to the study of ultra-short laser pulse dynamics in Ti:sapphire lasers In quadratic nonlinear optical media, a vector system of nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) type with coupling to a mean field has been derived. It has been established that a universal type of chaotic wave dynamics can develop in physical sand computational systems. Parameter regimes have been delineated where chaotic dynamics are predicted and observed. Such chaotic dynamics has been shown to arise in computational chaos, water waves and short pulses in nonlinear optical fibers. A class of free boundary problems has been investigated. New classes of localized solutions to multidimensional nonlinear wave problems have been obtained and analyzed.

Ocean Wave Dynamics is the most up-to-date book of its kind on the three main processes responsible for the generation and evolution of ocean waves: (i) atmospheric input from the wind, (ii) wave breaking and (iii) nonlinear interactions.Ocean waves are important for many reasons. They are the major environmental impact on in the design of coastal or offshore structures. Ocean waves are also fundamental to the processes of coastal flooding and beach erosion. They will play a major role in storm related coastal flooding which will rise in frequency as a result of sea level rise. Ocean waves are also an important part of the coupled ocean-atmosphere system. They determine the roughness of the ocean surface and hence have an impact on winds, fluxes of energy, gases and heat to the ocean and even the stability of ice sheets.Containing the latest research on ocean waves, it is a valuable resource for an overview of knowledge in this important field.Related Link(s)
