Anyone reading English translations of Buddhist texts will encounter a host of names, terms, and phrases whose meanings are not clear even though they appear in English. Buddhism is famous for its specialized terminology and translation alone may not communicate its full meaning. East Asian Buddhist diction is layered with several languages -Pali, Sanskrit, Chinese, and Japanese -and the only way to make one's way through this linguistic maze without getting lost is with the aid of a good dictionary. The Soka Gakkai Dictionary of Buddhism, a revised and expanded version of A Dictionary of Buddhist Terms and Concepts (1983), is a welcome addition that serves this purpose. Written clearly for the general reader, the Dictionary contains over 2,700 entries. While it is designed primarily for use with the Soka Gakkai's translations of Nichiren's works, the Dictionary contains a wealth of terms found in all other traditions of Buddhism. Definitions are given for technical terms, historical figures, doctrinal texts, institutions, and place names. The entries provide complete cross-references so that readers may know and further pursue meanings of term equivalents as rendered in other ways or languages. Ten appendixes provide maps and world lists that enable the reader to find terms in English, Pali, Sanskrit, Chinese, or Japanese. Like all Buddhist masters, Nichiren presented his particular message in the wider context of other Buddhist teachings and practices. To know the particular, one must also understand the general context, and the Dictionary, in addressing both levels, provides essential knowledge not only for students of Nichiren Buddhism but for anyone reading Buddhist texts.

Pagan Portals Nine S A Charm written by Martha Gray and has been published by Simon and Schuster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-07-29 with Body, Mind & Spirit categories.

Nine's a Charm explores the world of the extraordinary properties of plants that are believed to be ingredients for the Galdr Healing Charm. Even today, their influence extends beyond culinary use and into the world of magic and medicine, a world the ancient peoples of the past knew much better than ourselves. While modern medicine is only beginning to unlock their medicinal value, some still perform practices intuitively connected to their mystical, magical properties. While this book concentrates on the value of the herbs themselves, Shani Oats's scholarly introduction to the historical origins and practices of the charm itself will give a more rounded view of a work that still fascinates scholars today mostly due to the inability to accurately translate the whole text, where words and phrases are lost to the past or disguised for those who are uninitiated in the magical healing arts.

Those who practice Asatru believe in a direct line of communication with the gods. Asatru adherents hold the gods exist and can be communicated with in a variety of ways, including rites, prayers, and offerings. Since the Norse pantheon contains many gods and goddesses, Asatru cannot be considered a monotheistic religion like Christianity. To differentiate themselves from other polytheistic religions, some Asatru adherents use the term "Heathen." Asatru is a religion that emphasizes fellowship, with its adherents regularly coming together for worship, ceremonies, and communal meals. Asatru rituals differ from sect to sect, but they always involve some combination of praying to or offering gifts to the gods. The Asatruar, or members of the Asatru religion, observe holidays like Yule and Sigrblót. According to Asatru, honor is crucial. Respecting one's community and ancestors is a part of this. The Asatruar way of life emphasizes moral fortitude, self-reliance, and strength. Since they consider the natural world to be the home of the gods and goddesses, they try to live in peace with it. To an Asatruar, death is not the end, but a passage to a new world. Asatruar have faith that their ancestors will welcome them into Valhalla upon death, where they will wait for Ragnarok. This book will provide you with an in-depth understanding of the following subjects: Origins and History of Asatru Core Beliefs of Asatru Practices of Asatru Norse Mythology The Nine Worlds The Aesir and Vanir God Holidays and Festivals Significance of afterlife Asatru in the Modern World Asatru and Heathenism And Much More! Excerpt from The Nine Worlds: Stories From Norse Mythology Wonderful Stories of Northern Lands by Julia Goddard. The excuse for this book is, that, in many respects, it is unlike any that have been written on the same subject. And this is partly owing to the fact that Rydberg's researches have made it possible, for the first time, for one to form a definite concep tion of the cosmography of the mythology, and also because he clears away many inconsistencies that have long clung to it.
