This book sheds light on the contributions of architecture and its literary representations to a series of changes taking place in sexual culture during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in France, England, Germany and Austria. By analysing an important set of architectural discourses and literary representations of domestic architecture, the book illustrates the constant tension between an increasing sexual permissiveness and more conservative approaches to domesticity and sexuality. It shows the ways in which literature imagined the impact of new architectural designs on sexual culture that suggested the creation of more fluid forms of organisation of space and sexual mores.

Negotiating Domestic Violence written by Carolyn Hoyle and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998 with Family & Relationships categories.
This book examines the factors which shape the criminal justice response to domestic violence in the light of policy changes at the beginning of the 1990s which aimed to increase arrest rates. In particular, the book discusses the needs and expectations of victims and examines how their choices impact on decisions made by police and prosecutors. Many books on the criminal justice response to domestic violence start from the premise that withdrawal of complaints by victims and the subsequent discontinuance of cases, represents some kind of failure on the part of the agencies involved and that victims would benefit from greater determination by police to prosecute offenders wherever possible. Implicit in this approach is the assumption that the criminal justice system as it presently operates is capable of responding effectively to the needs of victims of domestic violence. This book throws doubt on the validity of these assumptions.

HOME + BOUND brings together six Master of Architecture dissertations (2009-2011) from the National University of Singapore. The essays engage with the notion of domesticity set within the geographical bounds of Southeast Asia - more specifically, Singapore and Malaysia. Theoretical framework, including those of Michel Foucault, Sigmund Freud, Jacques Derrida and Anthony Vidler, are surveyed against local sites interwoven with varying scales, tropes, (mis)conceptions and antinomies of domesticity: a Chinese cemetery, Singapore's public Housing Development Board flats, the older Singapore Improvement Trust flats, its National Day Parade sites, a haunted house, a rural kampong (village), some national monuments, and a Straits Chinese patriarch's mansion in Penang. What does it mean to be `at home' in a context where land and space are both limited and contentious? The ideals of stability attached to conceptions of `being at home' were retrogressive and antithetical to being `modern' - a fixation in Singapore and Southeast Asia's post-war milieu which continues to thrive under presuppositions of change and subsequent adaptations. The authors thus collectively front home as a destabilised ideology and a constantly evolving physical construct. This volume does not privilege the distinction between loss and recuperation of domestic sites and ideologies, or the ensuing difficulties of their reconciliation. Rather, it highlights the inseparable conditions between the recovery of domestic ideals and the agents who formulate such ideals.

Luxury And Modernism written by Robin Schuldenfrei and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-06-05 with Architecture categories.
While modernism was publicized as a fusion of technology, new materials, and rational aesthetics to improve the lives of ordinary people, it was often out of reach to the very masses it purportedly served. Luxury and Modernism shows how luxury was present in bold, literal forms in modern designs—from lavish materials and costly technologies to deluxe buildings and household objects—and in subtler ways as well, such as social milieus and modes of living. In a period of social unrest and extreme wealth disparity between the common worker and those at the helm of capitalist enterprises generating immense profits, architects envisioned modern designs providing solutions for a more equitable future. Robin Schuldenfrei exposes the disconnect between modernism's utopian discourse and its luxury objects and elite architectural commissions. Despite the movement's egalitarian rhetoric, many modern designs addressed the desires of the privileged individual. Yet as Schuldenfrei demonstrates, luxury was integral not only to how modern buildings and objects were designed, manufactured, and sold, but has contributed to modernism's appeal to this day. This beautifully illustrated book provides a new interpretation of modern architecture and design in Germany during the heyday of the Bauhaus and the Werkbund, tracing modernism's lasting allure to its many manifestations of luxury. Schuldenfrei casts the work of legendary figures such as Peter Behrens, Walter Gropius, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in an entirely different light, revealing the complexities and contradictions inherent to modernism's promotion and consumption.
