The uses of multimedia are rapidly increasing. Its power to present information in ways not previously possible and its integration of resources, allow for the creation of rich learning environments. Perspectives on Multimedia: Communication, Media and Information Technology provides a critical examination of the latest multimedia developments and approaches, such as Interface Technology and QoS architectures. Topics covered include: The key concepts intrinsic to digital forms of multimedia: integration, interactivity, hypermedia, immersion, narrativity and hybridity. The development of Information Technology (IT) usage in society and in the business community. How modern IT enables private companies and public organisations to support business operations, create new business opportunities, and to promote more proactive service management. Multimedia from a computer science perspective and how computer science provides the technical foundation for the computer software and hardware that drives the information age. Gives a broad range of perspectives on key issues for interactive multimedia in organisations and industry today. This book will be of interest to practitioners involved in multimedia development in an organisation, management consultants giving professional advice on digital solutions and information technology matters to their customer organisations and academics focusing on business and technical aspects of multimedia frameworks.

Multimedia data are used more and more widely in human being's life, e.g., videoconferencing, visual telephone, IPTV, etc. Nearly most of the applications need multimedia transmission techniques that send multimedia data from one side to another side and keep the properties of efficiency, robustness and security. Here, the efficiency denotes the time cost of transmission operations, the robustness denotes the ability to survive transmission errors or noises, and the security denotes the protection of the transmitted media content. Recently, various intelligent or innovative techniques are invented, which bring vast performance improvements to practical applications. For example, such content transmission techniques as p2p, sensor network and ad hoc network are constructed, which adaptively use the peers’ properties to improve the network’s resources. Multimedia adaptation techniques can adjust the multimedia data rate in order to compliant with the network’s bandwidth. Scalable encryption techniques can generate the data stream that can be correctly decrypted after bit rate conversion. Ubiquitous multimedia services make the user share any kind of content anywhere. The book includes fourteen chapters highlighting current concepts, issues and emerging technologies. Distinguished scholars from many prominent research institutions around the world contribute to the book. The book covers various aspects, including not only some fundamental knowledge and the latest key techniques, but also typical applications and open issues. For example, the covered topics include the present and future video coding standards, stereo and multiview coding techniques, free-viewpoint TV techniques, wireless broadcasting techniques, media streaming techniques, wireless media transmission techniques and systems, and User-Generated Content sharing.

Excellent textbook of multimedia signal processing also dealing with the optimization of multimedia communication systems. It covers the theoretical background of one- and multidimensional signal processing, statistical analysis and modeling, coding and information theory as well as estimation and classification theory. Numerous practical examples are given for algorithms and design of multimedia signal compression and transmission systems, for systems performing content analysis and indexing of multimedia signals. Principles behind multimedia coding and indexing standards, e.g. MPEG-1/-2/-4/-7 are explained in detail, including the most recent developments like the new Advanced Video Coding standard and Motion-Compensated Interframe Wavelet Coding. Numerous figures and examples illustrate the concepts. As the book is based on a graduate-level university course, most chapters are supplemented by exercises. The book is also a self-contained introduction both for researchers and developers of multimedia communication systems in industries.
