This very practical "Guide" is aimed at helping pre-service and inservice teachers put early childhood theories and information into daily practice. Aimed at long range, short range and daily lesson planning, it's coverage of such topics as "How to Plan and Document Individualized Teaching" and "Creating Developmentally Appropriate Lesson Plans" should be useful to anyone working with young children. An excellent, very complete book with step-by-step suggestions for "real world" planning and implementation of developmentally appropriate learning experiences for 3- to 5-year-olds.

This guide is intended for use in training Head Start staff working with families to plan and implement the program's curriculum through an individualized child development and education approach. The guide focuses specifically on enhancing staff skills in carrying out the four steps in the individualizing process: screening; evaluation; planning; and ongoing assessment. Following an introductory section, the guide presents four training modules. Each module details expected outcomes, key concepts, background information, learning activities, and next steps. Handouts are included for each module. Module One, "Learning about Each Child--The First Step in Individualizing," provides an overview of the individualizing process. Module Two, "Creating Essential Partnerships--Families and Staff Working Together," allows participants to establish partnerships with families so they can share information about each child. Module Three, "Individualizing Every Day--An Ongoing Dynamic Process," encourages participants to respond to each child's unique characteristics by individualizing all aspects of the curriculum. Module four, "Responding to Children's Progress--The Ongoing Process Continues," builds participants' ability to conduct ongoing assessment. The final sections of the guide contain continuing professional development and resource lists. Five appendices address individualizing, culturally competent practices, screening instruments, characteristics of strong partnerships, and assessment in Head Start. (SD)

The increasing diversity in our society is impossible to ignore. This increase naturally brings in more diversity in our early childhood centers across the nation. Working with families from many different backgrounds is not new to Head Start Centers. However there is a continual struggle for programs to tailor their policies and practices to the individual needs of the families that they serve. Parents of children that speak languages other than English in a Head Start program may feel less supported about their home culture compared to those parents that speak predominantly English. The revised version of the Multicultural Principles is one tool that can help guide programs to implement multicultural principles and monitor how well they are individualizing their program to the families they serve. These principles however, are only helpful if families and teachers believe in them and make efforts to ensure that they are being actualized through daily practice.
