This collection of essays emerged out of intense conversations on multi-sited ethnography, prompted by a workshop held at the University of Sussex that brought together researchers from different institutional backgrounds and affiliations in Europe, the United States and Africa – including George Marcus himself, the person most associated with the term and the method. These researchers were brought together not only to discuss the shifting meaning of the concept in anthropology, but also to see how it has influenced actual research projects that have spanned the world. The volume that has resulted is not meant to be read as a program but as an extended provocation, an argument that multi-sitedness can be good not only to think, but also to act, both with and through. Arguably, this creation of a dynamic, shifting perspective is not so different from anthropology itself – a discipline dependent on the cultivation of aesthetic, embodied and intellectual sensibilities in relation to the world at large.

The notion of multi-sited ethnography (MSE) has mostly been used, after George Marcus (1995), as a shorthand for all ways of doing ethnographic fieldwork in more than one site. While the underlying claim for a radical departure from classical research objects and fields has been problematized by other anthropologists (e.g., Ferguson, 2011), MSE has soon taken an academic life of its own. Importantly, Marcus's seminal formulation placed greater emphasis on the processual connections between sites than the plurality of them. In the 1980s, George Marcus spearheaded a major critique of cultural anthropology, expressed most clearly in the landmark book Writing Culture, which he coedited with James Clifford. Ethnography through Thick and Thin updates and advances that critique for the late 1990s. Marcus presents a series of penetrating and provocative essays on the changes that continue to sweep across anthropology. He examines, in particular, how the discipline's central practice of ethnography has been changed by "multi-sited" approaches to anthropology and how new research patterns are transforming anthropologists' careers. Marcus rejects the view, often expressed, that these changes are undermining anthropology. The combination of traditional ethnography with scholarly experimentation, he argues, will only make the discipline more lively and diverse. The book is divided into three main parts. In the first, Marcus shows how ethnographers' tradition of defining fieldwork in terms of peoples and places is now being challenged by the need to study culture by exploring connections, parallels, and contrasts among a variety of often seemingly incommensurate sites. The second part illustrates this emergent multi-sited condition of research by reflecting it in some of Marcus's own past research on Tongan elites and dynastic American fortunes. In the final section, which includes the previously unpublished essay "Sticking with Ethnography through Thick and Thin," Marcus examines the evolving professional culture of anthropology and the predicaments of its new scholars. He shows how students have increasingly been drawn to the field as much by such powerful interdisciplinary movements as feminism, postcolonial studies, and cultural studies as by anthropology's own traditions. He also considers the impact of demographic changes within the discipline--in particular the fact that anthropologists are no longer almost exclusively Euro-Americans studying non-Euro-Americans. These changes raise new issues about the identities of anthropologists in relation to those they study, and indeed, about what is to define standards of ethnographic scholarship. Filled with keen and highly illuminating observations, Ethnography through Thick and Thin will stimulate fresh debate about the past, present, and future of a discipline undergoing profound transformations.

This case explains key features of multi-sited ethnography, providing insights into the enactment of policy and politics within and across a range of public administration spaces. Offering reflections on the ethnographic experience of ́being there,́ the case discusses gaining access, defining a field, ethical behavior, data analysis, and presenting findings. The first site is a Parliamentary building of historic significance but used in a modern policy context. Politics is not overt, but power is exerted and discourse is highly political and the formal space is exclusive. In a town hall, stable physical boundaries delineate relationships between elected decision makers, their representatives, and observers. A history of who has been permitted to speak, and thus exert political power, is evident in the architecture. In contrast, a community space is more fluid, again influenced by history but also by neoliberal welfare reform policy. Here, the space is structured less by architecture and more by oral history and local knowledge that interacts in tension with an administrative Geographic Information System (G.I.S.). The G.I.S. map conveys order and precision, but politics is in evidence, and it is unclear who has the power to reinforce the liminal boundary. The different sites are analyzed using spatial theory and theories of governing at a distance to show how processes of inclusion and exclusion operate and to argue that governing also takes place at close range. Unpredictable policy effects are achieved variously by means of seduction, enrolment, and coercion that feature in these otherwise disparate spaces.

This anthology emanated from a conference in St. Johnâ (TM)s, Newfoundland, that brought together popular music scholars, folklorists and ethnomusicologists from Canada and Australia. Implicit in that conference and in this anthology is the comparability of the two countries. Their â ~post-colonialâ (TM) status (if that is indeed an appropriate modifier in either case) has some points of similarity. On the other hand, their â ~distanceâ (TM) â " from hegemonic centres, from colonial histories â " is arguably more a matter of contrast than similarity. Canada and Australia are similar in various regards. Post-colonial in the sense that they are both former British colonies, they now each have more than a century of stature as nation states. By the beginning of the 21st century, they are each modest in size but rich in ethnocultural diversity. Nonetheless, each country has some skeletons in the closet where openness to difference, to indigenous and new immigrant groups are concerned. Both countries are similarly both experiencing rapid shifts in cultural makeup with the biggest population increases in Australia coming from China, India, and South Africa, and the biggest in Canada from Afro-Caribbean, South Asian countries, and China. The chapters in this anthology constitute an important comparative initiative. Perhaps the most obvious point of comparison is that both countries create commercial music in the shadow of the hegemonic US and British industries. As the authors demonstrate, both proximity (specifically Canadaâ (TM)s nearness to the US) and distance have advantages and disadvantages. As the third and fourth largest Anglophone music markets for popular music, they face similar issues relating to music management, performance markets, and production. A second relationship, as chapters in this anthology attest, is the significant movement between the two countries in a matrix of exchange and influence among musicians that has rarely been studied hitherto. Third, both countries invite comparison with regard to the popular music production of diverse social groups within their national populations. In particular, the tremendous growth of indigenous popular music has resulted in opportunities as well as challenges. Additionally, however, the strategies that different waves of immigrants have adopted to devise or localize popular music that was both competitive and meaningful to their own people as well as to a larger demographic bear comparison. The historical similarities and differences as well as the global positionality of each country in the early 21st century, then, invites comparison relating to musical practices, social organization, lyrics as they articulate social issues, career strategies, industry structures and listeners.
