A subfield of mathematics that applies formal logic to mathematical contexts is called mathematical logic. It is intricately linked with the foundations of metamathematics, mathematics, and theoretical computer science. Central to its study are the analysis of the deductive capabilities of formal proof systems and the expressive potential of formal systems. Primary subfields within mathematical logic include set theory, recursion theory, proof theory, model theory, each with its unique focus. Propositional logic and first-order logic systems are extensively investigated for their relevance to the foundations of mathematics. Moreover, classical logic systems such as second-order logic or infinitary logic, along with nonclassical logic systems like intuitionistic logic, are areas of exploration in this field. The topics included in this book on mathematical logic are of utmost significance and bound to provide incredible insights to readers. It includes topics that deal with the basic to the most complex concepts and approaches of this area. It will serve as a valuable source of reference for graduate and postgraduate students.

This volume contains newly-commissioned articles covering the development of modern logic from the late medieval period (fourteenth century) through the end of the twentieth-century. It is the first volume to discuss the field with this breadth of coverage and depth. It will appeal to scholars and students of philosophical logic and the philosophy of logic.

"Introduction to Mathematical Logic" is tailored for undergraduate students seeking a comprehensive introduction to this essential field of mathematics. We provide an accessible yet rigorous exploration of the principles, methods, and applications of mathematical logic. From the foundations of propositional and predicate logic to advanced topics like Gödel's incompleteness theorems and computability theory, we cover a broad range of concepts central to the study of logic. Through clear explanations, illustrative examples, and carefully crafted exercises, students will develop a deep understanding of logical reasoning, formal proof techniques, and the structure of mathematical arguments. Moreover, we emphasize the interdisciplinary nature of mathematical logic, showcasing its relevance in mathematics, philosophy, computer science, and beyond. Real-world applications of logical reasoning are woven throughout the text, demonstrating how logical principles underpin various fields of study, from algorithm design and formal verification to philosophical analysis and linguistic theory. Whether you're a mathematics major, a philosophy student, or pursuing studies in computer science, this book equips you with the tools and insights necessary to navigate the complexities of mathematical logic with confidence. With its blend of theory and application, this text serves as an invaluable resource for undergraduate students embarking on their journey into the realm of mathematical logic.

Recent years have seen the appearance of many English-Ianguage hand books of logie and numerous monographs on topieal discoveries in the foundations of mathematies. These publications on the foundations of mathematies as a whole are rather difficult for the beginners or refer the reader to other handbooks and various pieeemeal eontribu tions and also sometimes to largely conceived "mathematical fol klore" of unpublished results. As distinct from these, the present book is as easy as possible systematic exposition of the now classical results in the foundations of mathematics. Henee the book may be useful especially for those readers who want to have all the proofs carried out in full and all the concepts explained in detail. In this sense the book is self-contained. The reader's ability to guess is not assumed, and the author's ambition was to reduce the use of sueh words as evident and obvious in proofs to aminimum. This is why the book, it is believed, may be helpful in teaehing or learning the foundation of mathematics in those situations in which the student cannot refer to a parallel lecture on the subject. This is also the reason that I do not insert in the book the last results and the most modem and fashionable approaches to the subjeet, which does not enrich the essential knowledge in founda tions but ean discourage the beginner by their abstract form. This book presents diverse topics in mathematical logic such as proof theory, meta-mathematics, and applications of logic to mathematical structures. The collection spans the first 100 years of modern logic and is dedicated to the memory of Irving Anellis, founder of the journal 'Modern Logic', whose academic work was essential in promoting the algebraic tradition of logic, as represented by Charles Sanders Peirce. Anellis’s association with the Russian logic community introduced their school of logic to a wider audience in the USA, Canada and Western Europe. In addition, the collection takes a historical perspective on proof theory and the development of logic and mathematics in Eastern Logic, the Soviet Union and Russia. The book will be of interest to historians and philosophers in logic and mathematics, and the more specialized papers will also appeal to mathematicians and logicians.
