The book is the culmination of the authors' many years of teaching and research in atomic physics, nuclear and particle physics, and modern physics. It is also a crystallization of their intense passion and strong interest in the history of physics and the philosophy of science. The book gives students a broad perspective of the current understandings of the basic structures of matter from atoms, nucleus to leptons, quarks, and gluons along with the essential introductory quantum mechanics and special relativity. Fundamentals aside, the book retrospects the historical development and examines the challenging future directions of nuclear and particle physics. Interwoven within the content are up-to-date examples of very recent developments and future plans that show in detail how the techniques and ideas of atomic, nuclear, and particle physics have been used and are being used to solve important problems in basic and applied areas of physics, chemistry, and biology that are closely linked to the prevailing major societal problems in medicine, energy resources, new custom-made materials and environmental pollution, as well as areas that encroach the broad cultural and historical interest. The uncertain path of success and failure, opportunities seized and missed, and the axiom of probability and scientists' intuition in the unfolding human drama of scientific discovery are vividly presented. Throughout the highly perceptive book, readers, especially the students are encouraged to reflect on problems and ask questions.

The field that focuses on examining atoms as self-contained systems composed of electrons and a nucleus is atomic physics. In this discipline, atomic models typically depict a single nucleus encircled by one or more bound electrons. These electrons occupy discrete shells around the nucleus and are considered to be in bound states. Atomic physics involves investigating phenomena such as ionization and excitation caused by photons and collisions with atomic particles. Ionization, for instance, occurs when an atom or molecule gains or loses electrons, resulting in a negative or positive charge. This branch of physics is closely interconnected with the fields of molecular and optical physics. This book is a compilation of chapters that discuss the most vital concepts in the field of atomic physics. The topics covered herein deal with the core aspects of this area. It will also serve as a reference guide for students and academicians.

Much of our understanding of physics in the last 30-plus years has come from research on atoms, photons, and their interactions. Collecting information previously scattered throughout the literature, Modern Atomic Physics provides students with one unified guide to contemporary developments in the field. After reviewing metrology and preliminary mat

"The textbook itself is the culmination of the authors' many years of teaching and research in atomic physics, nuclear and particle physics, and modern physics. It is also a crystallization of their intense passion and strong interest in the history of physics and the philosophy of science. Together with the solution manual which presents solutions to many end-of-chapter problems in the textbook, they are a valuable resource to the instructors and students working in the modern atomic field."--Publisher's website.

level, and a good understanding of the links to classical mechanics is almost always helpful. The aim ofTheoretical Atomic Physics remains to provide the reader with a solid foundation of this sort of advanced quantum mechanics. In preparing the third edition I have again tried to do justice to the rapid development of the ?eld. I have included references to important new work whenever this seemed appropriate and easy to do. Chapter 1 now includes a section on processes involving (wave packets of) continuum states and also an expanded treatment of the semiclassical approximation. Chapter 3 begins with a section illuminating the characteristic di?erences in the near-threshold properties of long-ranged and shorter-ranged potentials, and the ?rst section of Chap. 4 contains a more elaborate discussion of scattering lengths. As a further “special topic” in Chap. 5 there is a section describing some aspects of atom optics, including discusions of the interactions of atoms with material surfacesandwithlight?elds. Theappendixonspecialmathematicalfunctions has been slightly expanded to accommodate a few results that I repeatedly found to be useful. I am grateful to many colleagues who continue to inspire me with num- ous discussions involving atomic physics, quantum mechanics and semiclas- cal connections, in particular Robin Cot ˆ ́ e at the University of Connecticut, Manfred Kleber at the Technical University Munich and Jan-Michael Rost at the Max–Planck–Institute for Complex Systems in Dresden.
